Troubleshooting
No service with your eSIM: from SOS Only to a mobile network
Seeing No Service, Searching, or SOS Only? Check coverage, the active line, roaming, and network registration without deleting your eSIM profile.
In this guide
No Service, Searching, or SOS Only means your phone is not connected to the eSIM's mobile network. Test in another location first, check that the line is enabled, and then refresh the network registration. Changing the APN is not useful while there is no network connection.
HolySim advice: ask someone beside you whether they have mobile reception. That one answer separates a local coverage gap from a problem on your phone.
Look at the location and timing
Go outside or stand near a window. Basements, parking garages, elevators, tunnels, airport halls, and buildings with thick walls weaken radio signals. After landing, wait until the doors open and you leave the terminal building; the phone cannot register while airplane mode is enabled or no usable signal reaches it.
No network may be available on a mountain pass, island ferry, or desert route. Offline maps and saved addresses therefore remain necessary, even with a generous data plan.
If other phones in the same place also have no network, move elsewhere first. A reset or APN change cannot make a cell tower reachable.
Check that the eSIM line is enabled
An installed profile can be switched off. Open SIM management and tap the name of the travel eSIM.
On iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular, select the eSIM, and enable Turn On This Line. On Android, the switch is usually under Network & internet > SIMs, or on Samsung under Connections > SIM manager.
Is the eSIM completely absent from that list? This is not a reception problem. Use the recovery steps for an eSIM that cannot be added or an eSIM missing after a reset.
Check the destination and validity
An eSIM for Japan will not register on a Dutch network if the Netherlands is not part of the plan. Check the exact coverage area, particularly for regional plans with exceptions.
Also check the validity period. A plan can start on installation, on a fixed date, or on the first supported network connection. If the period has expired, the profile may remain visible while network registration or data is no longer allowed.
An active eSIM without a network at home is therefore not automatically faulty. Test it at the destination for which you bought it.
Refresh the connection
Apple recommends enabling airplane mode for at least fifteen seconds and switching it off again when you see No Service. Restart the phone if the network still does not appear.
After the restart, check that:
- airplane mode is off;
- the eSIM line is enabled;
- data roaming is enabled on the travel eSIM;
- date and time are set automatically;
- the phone is running current software.
Google lists airplane mode, restarting, and resetting mobile settings in its Pixel steps for connectivity problems. Start with the reversible steps; resetting comes later.
Automatic or manual network selection
Leave network selection on automatic at first. The eSIM then tries to select an approved partner. This can take a few minutes after you arrive or cross a border.
If automatic selection does not work and the installation instructions name one or more partner networks, temporarily disable automatic selection and choose only one of those listed partners. Wait patiently for the result after each choice.
A message such as Network unavailable or Forbidden for an arbitrary carrier does not mean your phone is broken. The plan may simply be unable to use that network. Record which approved partners are visible and which error appears.
Data roaming and reception are not the same
Data roaming normally needs to be enabled for a travel eSIM. However, roaming is not the cause of every case with no signal bars. The setting determines whether data may travel through a partner; the phone must first be able to receive and register with that partner.
Once a network name or 4G/LTE/5G appears but websites do not load, the reception problem has been resolved. Continue with the troubleshooting steps for no internet after eSIM installation.
Update carrier settings and software
On iPhone, open Settings > General > About to check whether a carrier settings update is ready. Apple includes this in the same troubleshooting path for No Service. Connect to Wi-Fi first.
On Android, network improvements usually arrive through system updates. Do not install a major update immediately before departure without a backup, but update an outdated phone at home if an eSIM will not register.
Do you have a phone from another region? Check that the model supports the local frequencies and has no carrier lock. The brand name alone is insufficient; regional variants can differ.
When a network reset is appropriate
A mobile network settings reset can help when the phone cannot register with any approved network in several locations while other phones can. Save Wi-Fi passwords, VPN settings, and APN details first. They may be erased.
Do not choose Erase All Content or perform a factory reset. Do not delete the eSIM either. A QR code may be single-use, and deleting the profile does not improve coverage.
When you need support
Contact support if other phones have reception, you are in the correct country, the plan is valid, and no approved partner accepts your eSIM. Send this information:
- your current city or location and country;
- phone brand, model, and software version;
- the text shown beside the eSIM in SIM management;
- networks visible during manual selection;
- exact error messages;
- screenshots of the line status and roaming settings.
Support can then check whether your plan is active and which network partner should work at that location.
Sources and editorial review
The basic steps follow current guidance from Apple and Google. Coverage, local frequencies, partner networks, and device registration differ by country and plan. A coverage map is an expectation, not a guarantee for every building or natural area. Last substantively reviewed on July 15, 2026.
Frequently asked questions
What does SOS Only mean on my iPhone?
Your iPhone is not registered with your mobile carrier but may still be able to use emergency communications where technically and locally available. Check the coverage, active eSIM, and network registration.
Why does my regular SIM have service while my eSIM does not?
The two lines may use different networks and coverage areas. Check whether the eSIM is valid at your location and whether the line is enabled.
Does a different APN help when there is no service?
No, not when you see no signal bars or No Service. The APN routes data after the phone establishes a network connection. Resolve registration first.
May I select a carrier manually?
Only select a partner named in your installation instructions. A visible network may still reject your plan.
How long does network registration take after landing?
Often a few minutes. Disable airplane mode, check the active line, and wait outside a shielded area. If it takes longer, restart without deleting the eSIM.
