Troubleshooting
Cannot add an eSIM: check the phone, carrier lock, and profile
Is Add eSIM missing or does your phone reject the profile? Check eSIM support, the EID, carrier lock, internet, and existing profiles.
In this guide
If the Add eSIM option is missing, first check whether your exact phone variant supports eSIM and displays an EID. If the button is present but adding the profile fails, investigate the internet connection, carrier lock, software, existing profiles, and exact error message.
HolySim advice: record the complete model code, not justiPhoneorSamsung Galaxy. Support can differ between regional variants.
Is the button really missing?
Search in Settings for eSIM, cellular plan, SIM manager, or add SIM. Manufacturers use different names.
On iPhone, the option is normally under Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM. On Pixel, look under Network & internet > SIMs. On Samsung, it is usually under Connections > SIM manager > Add eSIM.
If there is no option anywhere, check the EID. Open the device information or dial *#06#. An EID identifies the built-in eSIM chip. If it is missing, the phone model, regional variant, or software may not offer eSIM.
An IMEI alone does not prove eSIM support. Many phones without eSIM still have one or more IMEI numbers.
Check the exact model and region
One product name can cover dozens of variants. Find the model code under Settings > About and verify it with the manufacturer. Pay particular attention to devices bought for another market or imported from abroad.
For setting up an eSIM, Apple lists both a compatible iPhone model and a carrier that supports eSIM. Samsung notes that eSIM service can vary by country and carrier.
A software update may improve menu labels or carrier support, but it cannot add missing eSIM hardware.
Check for a carrier lock
A carrier-locked phone may reject an eSIM from another provider. On iPhone, check Settings > General > About for carrier-lock or SIM-lock information. The wording differs by iOS version and country.
Android has no universal setting that reliably shows a carrier lock. Ask the original carrier or seller to confirm it using your IMEI. HolySim cannot remove a lock imposed by another carrier.
Write down the exact wording if you see a message such as eSIM not supported, Cellular plans from this carrier cannot be added, or SIM not valid. The text often points directly to compatibility or a carrier lock.
Make sure the phone has a real internet connection
Your phone must download the profile. Connect to stable Wi-Fi, open a website first, and complete any captive-portal login. Temporarily disable a VPN or strict corporate profile if it blocks downloads.
Apple lists Wi-Fi and current software among the basic requirements when an eSIM cannot be set up. Samsung likewise asks for Wi-Fi or mobile data before adding the profile.
Restart the phone after establishing the connection. Then open the eSIM menu again and try once.
Check whether the profile already exists
An error during the final installation step may still have added a profile. Review every line in SIM management, including disabled lines with a generic name.
If the new eSIM is listed, do not scan the QR code again. Switch on the line and check whether it is still activating. If necessary, continue with the troubleshooting steps for an eSIM that remains stuck on activating.
Do not delete old profiles at random. An old travel profile may occupy a storage slot, but deletion is permanent and its QR code may not be reusable. Only delete a profile when you are certain you no longer need it.
Is the QR code the problem?
If the button is present and the scanner opens but cannot read the code, the phone probably supports eSIM and the problem occurs later in the process.
Use the original code on a bright second screen and check that you opened the correct order email. Choose manual installation using the SM-DP+ address and activation code if HolySim supplied them. For errors such as invalid or already used, read the separate eSIM QR-code guide.
Check the available space for cellular plans
Phones can store several eSIM profiles, but the maximum and number of simultaneously active lines vary by model. An error such as maximum number of eSIMs reached requires you to manage existing profiles, not obtain another QR code.
First switch off an unused line. If the phone genuinely cannot store another profile, delete only an expired profile after checking its name, destination, and remaining value. Take a screenshot of the list beforehand.
Update software and carrier settings
Install the latest stable software available for your phone. On iPhone, also open Settings > General > About and check whether a carrier settings update appears.
Do this on reliable Wi-Fi and with enough battery power. Restart after the update. Do not erase the phone or perform a factory reset; neither is a normal requirement for adding a travel eSIM.
When support needs to take over
Contact support if you have an EID, the phone is carrier-unlocked, the button is visible, Wi-Fi works, and the code is still rejected. Send:
- your order number;
- the complete phone model code and software version;
- the EID and IMEI through a secure support channel;
- the exact error message;
- a screenshot of SIM management without the QR code;
- whether the code was previously used on another phone.
HolySim can then check whether the profile is ready, has already been downloaded, or needs to be reissued.
Sources and editorial review
The compatibility and installation steps were checked against guidance from Apple and Samsung. Maximum profile counts, regional phone variants, and carrier-lock checks differ by manufacturer and carrier. Always verify the exact model number. Last substantively reviewed on July 15, 2026.
Frequently asked questions
Why can I not see Add eSIM?
The feature may have a different name, be hidden by a management policy, or be absent from your phone variant. Search for eSIM and check whether the device information shows an EID.
Does an EID mean every eSIM will work?
No. An EID confirms eSIM hardware, but the phone may still have a carrier lock, regional restriction, or incompatibility with the provider.
Can a full eSIM list prevent me from adding one?
Yes. A phone can have a limit for stored or active profiles. Only delete verifiably expired profiles that you no longer need.
Do I need to reset my phone?
No. Check compatibility, carrier lock, internet, software, and existing profiles first. A factory reset is disproportionate and can erase data.
Can HolySim remove my carrier lock?
No. Only the original carrier or seller can confirm whether unlocking is possible.
