eSIM stuck on activating: when to wait and when to act
Does your phone keep showing Activating or Activation Failed? Check the destination, Wi-Fi, line status, and carrier settings without deleting the profile.
In this guide
Leave the eSIM in place if it remains stuck on Activating. A travel profile may only finish activating when it reaches a supported network at the destination. If you are already there, check the internet connection, line status, airplane mode, and software before contacting support.
HolySim advice: record how long the status has been visible and whether you are at home or at the destination. Without those two details, Activating says very little.Installation and activation happen at different times
During installation, your phone downloads the eSIM profile. During activation, that profile becomes usable on the mobile network. These steps can happen immediately one after the other, but they do not have to.
A travel eSIM for Thailand may already appear in SIM management at home while it cannot reach a Thai partner network. The line may then show a provisional status. That is less concerning than the same message after you have arrived and moved outside the airport.
Check the HolySim instructions to see when the plan should start: on installation, on a fixed date, or on the first network connection. That condition determines whether waiting makes sense.
Are you not at the destination yet?
Check that the profile is visible and leave it alone. Give it a recognizable name, such as Japan data, and keep your regular SIM selected as the mobile data line for now.
You do not need to reactivate a travel eSIM every day. Do not scan the QR code again or delete the profile. Save the APN, order details, and support information offline before arrival.
Do the product terms state that validity starts immediately after installation? In that case, an Activating status is a reason to contact support promptly because the validity period may already be running while you have no connection.
Have you already arrived?
Perform these checks:
- Switch airplane mode off completely.
- Enable the eSIM line in SIM management.
- Select the eSIM as the mobile data line.
- Enable data roaming on the eSIM.
- Leave network selection on automatic at first.
- Switch airplane mode on for fifteen seconds and off again.
- Restart the phone and wait a few minutes.
Test outside a basement, parking garage, or shielded terminal. Network activation cannot finish without a usable partner signal.
Use stable internet during installation
If the download itself is still in progress, your phone needs a working internet connection. Connect to reliable Wi-Fi and open a website to test the connection. Complete the login page for hotel or airport Wi-Fi first.
Temporarily disable a VPN or corporate filter if it blocks traffic to the activation server. Avoid public Wi-Fi when a trusted hotspot or home network is available.
Apple lists Wi-Fi, an active plan, and current software among the requirements when an eSIM cannot be set up. Samsung likewise asks for Wi-Fi or mobile data before an eSIM is downloaded.
Check the line status on iPhone
Open Settings > Cellular. If the eSIM is listed, tap it and switch the line off and on again. Then restart the iPhone.
Go to the eSIM section through Settings > General > About. Wait briefly; if a carrier settings update is available, iOS may offer it there. Apple explicitly includes this check when troubleshooting setup problems.
If the error persists, record the EID and IMEI from the same information screen. Only share them with HolySim through the official support channel.
Check the line status on Android
Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs. On Samsung, you will usually use Connections > SIM manager. Check that the eSIM is switched on and is not shown as awaiting download.
Switch the line off and on once. Then restart the phone. Install available stable system updates over Wi-Fi. Menu names and status messages differ, so take screenshots instead of trying to recall the wording later.
If a download message remains without progress, check available storage and the internet connection. Do not indiscriminately clear the cache of system apps; that may remove management data without making the plan available again.
Activating is different from no internet
Does a network name, 4G, LTE, or 5G appear after a while? Activation has probably finished. If the internet still does not work, continue with the troubleshooting steps for no internet after installation. They cover the data line, roaming, allowance, and APN.
If No Service remains while the eSIM is shown as active, troubleshoot the reception or registration problem. Keeping these situations separate prevents you from trying to reinstall a correctly activated profile.
Do not delete the profile
An eSIM listed in SIM management has often already consumed its QR code. Deleting it does not speed up activation and may leave you unable to continue without a new code.
Do not perform a factory reset either. It is not a normal activation step. A network-settings reset may later be suggested by support, but first save your Wi-Fi, VPN, and APN details.
When waiting no longer helps
Contact support when you are at the correct destination, have tested outside a shielded building, enabled the line and roaming, restarted the phone, and the status still does not change. Also contact support immediately for Activation Failed, Plan Not Active, or an error code.
Send your order number, location, phone model, software version, EID, IMEI, and screenshots of the status. State when you scanned the QR code and whether the validity period has already started according to the terms.
Sources and editorial review
The device checks are based on current documentation from Apple and Samsung. The meaning of a provisional activation status and the plan's start time depend on the product. HolySim can check the order to see whether the profile has been downloaded and whether provider-side activation is open. Last substantively reviewed on July 15, 2026.
Frequently asked questions
How long can an eSIM remain on Activating?
At the destination, the status should generally change within a few minutes once a supported network is available. Before departure, a travel eSIM may wait longer for its first local connection.
Does my plan start while the eSIM is activating?
That varies by plan. Check whether the validity period starts on installation, on a fixed date, or on the first network connection.
Should I scan the QR code again?
No. If the profile is listed in SIM management, the code has often already been used. Leave the profile in place and contact support if an error appears.
Why does the eSIM not activate at home?
A destination-specific eSIM may not be able to reach an approved partner network at home. Check the coverage and test after arrival.
What should I send to support?
Send the exact status, screenshots, location, phone model, software version, EID, IMEI, and installation time. Only share the QR code when support requests it securely.
