Transfer an eSIM to a new phone: check first, delete later

Safely transfer an eSIM to a new iPhone, Samsung, or Pixel. The method depends on the device, carrier, and type of eSIM plan.

Do not delete the eSIM from your old phone before the provider has confirmed how the transfer works. Carrier plans can sometimes be transferred directly. A travel eSIM with a one-time QR code is often tied to the first installation and may require a new code or reissue.

HolySim advice: keep the old phone, new phone, and a working Wi-Fi connection close at hand. Test the new line completely before erasing or trading in the old device.

First determine which type of eSIM you have

A regular mobile plan has a phone number and may support transfer through Apple, Samsung, or Android if the carrier participates. A prepaid travel eSIM is usually a separate data profile with its own installation conditions. Device transfer is not automatic in that case.

Check your order email for:

  • whether the QR code is single-use;
  • whether the profile is already installed on the old device;
  • whether any allowance and validity remain;
  • whether transfer or reinstallation is mentioned;
  • which order number support will need.

Contact HolySim before deleting a travel eSIM that has already been used. Support can assess what is possible for each individual plan.

From iPhone to iPhone

Apple offers eSIM Quick Transfer when the carrier supports it. Connect both iPhones to Wi-Fi, turn on Bluetooth, and keep the devices near each other.

  1. On the new iPhone, open Settings > Cellular.
  2. Tap Add eSIM or Set Up Cellular.
  3. Select the plan that can be transferred from the old iPhone.
  4. If it is not shown, choose Transfer From Nearby iPhone.
  5. Confirm on the old iPhone and enter the displayed code if requested.
  6. Wait until the new line has been activated.
  7. Test calls or mobile data before erasing the old iPhone.

In its current iPhone eSIM setup instructions, Apple states that the old SIM is deactivated once the transfer to the new iPhone succeeds. If the transfer option does not appear, the carrier may not support this method.

Do not treat Quick Transfer as proof that a HolySim travel profile can be transferred. First ask whether the specific plan participates or requires a new installation.

From Samsung to Samsung

Samsung offers direct eSIM transfer on supported models and with participating carriers.

  1. On the new device, go to Settings > Connections > SIM manager > Add eSIM.
  2. Tap Transfer SIM from another device.
  3. Confirm the transfer on the old device.
  4. Enter the six-digit verification code if requested.
  5. Select the desired line and complete the transfer on both phones.

Samsung's official eSIM explanation lists an unlocked device as a requirement and makes clear that carrier support may be necessary. If the option is missing, ask the carrier for a new activation method.

To a Google Pixel or another Android phone

Google can transfer a SIM during the initial device setup or later from Settings. For automatic transfer, Google lists Android 12 or later, current Google Play services, and a screen lock on both devices.

After the initial setup, open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM > Transfer SIM from another device on the new Pixel. Follow the confirmation steps on the old device.

In Transfer a SIM to a new phone, Google emphasizes that the method varies by carrier. If the transfer fails, the old eSIM may still work. Do not erase it while trying.

Between iPhone and Android

Transfer between platforms depends on the carrier. New software may display a direct transfer option, but the plan and both devices must support the method. If no valid option appears, contact the carrier for a new eSIM or QR code.

You can transfer photos and apps through the normal device migration process, but do not treat a backup as a copy of the eSIM. The mobile profile has a separate activation method.

Test after the transfer

Check on the new phone that:

  1. the eSIM is listed in SIM management and enabled;
  2. the correct line is selected for data;
  3. roaming is configured correctly for a travel eSIM;
  4. a web page loads with Wi-Fi disabled;
  5. the old device no longer uses the line if the transfer is meant to be exclusive.

Delete the old profile only after completing this test. If someone else will receive the old device, erase the entire phone afterward according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Sources and editorial review

The direct transfer methods were checked with Apple, Samsung, and Google. All three make transfer dependent on the device, software, and carrier support. HolySim can only confirm for each ordered plan whether a travel eSIM can be reissued or installed again. Last editorial review: July 15, 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Can I scan the same QR code on my new phone?

Do not assume so. The code may have been consumed during the first installation. Ask HolySim before deleting the old profile.

Does a phone backup restore my eSIM as well?

Not reliably. Treat the eSIM as a separate mobile plan with its own transfer or activation process.

What if the transfer fails?

Leave the profile on the old phone, take screenshots, and contact the provider. Do not try to delete and scan again at the same time.

Can I transfer an eSIM from Android to iPhone?

Sometimes, if the carrier and devices support direct transfer. Otherwise, you need a new activation or QR code from the carrier.

When can I erase the old phone?

Only after the new phone can make calls or access the internet over the transferred line with Wi-Fi disabled and the carrier status is correct.
