Top up or extend eSIM data: what happens next?
Learn what happens when eSIM data runs out, whether you can top up or extend it, and how to check remaining data, validity, and costs safely while traveling.

You can top up an eSIM only when the provider and that specific profile support it. A top-up adds data or a new package; it does not automatically extend the current validity period. If there is no Top up or Add data button, you will usually need a new package or a new eSIM.
Quick advice: before buying, check whether top-ups are available, when an added package starts, and whether the existing profile must remain on the phone. Delete an empty eSIM only after confirming that it cannot be reused.
What happens when your eSIM data runs out?
With a fixed-data plan, the internet connection usually stops when the allowance reaches zero. Some plans reduce the speed or still display a page where you can buy more data. The exact behavior is defined by the package terms.
Your home SIM does not safely take over by default. When automatic cellular data switching is enabled, the phone may fall back to that line. This can cause charges outside your domestic allowance. Disable automatic switching and confirm which SIM is selected for data.
No internet does not always mean that the allowance is empty. Check coverage, validity, data roaming, and the selected line first. If necessary, follow no internet after eSIM installation.
Top-up, new package, or validity extension

Airalo explains in its own help center that only rechargeable eSIMs can be topped up. That is an example of provider policy, not a universal eSIM rule. Always check the product information for your plan.
How to check and buy more data
Start with the eSIM provider's app, website, or order portal. Its counter is authoritative for the package and billing; the phone mainly reports the usage measured on that device.

- Confirm the destination, networks, and APN before paying.
- Keep the existing eSIM profile on the phone.
- Toggle Airplane Mode if the new data does not appear.
On iPhone, you can view usage per app and selected data line. Apple notes that the most accurate current figure comes from your mobile carrier. Android can show plan status and sell added data with supported carriers, but availability varies by carrier and region.
Remaining data, validity, and refunds
Unused data generally expires when the package validity ends unless the terms mention rollover or extension. A top-up shortly before the end date therefore makes sense only when the added package receives its own validity or carries remaining data forward.
An unused eSIM is not automatically refundable. Digital products may have different refund conditions after delivery, installation, or activation. Check the policy before purchase and, for a technical issue, save screenshots of error messages, profile status, and settings.
Automatic renewal is not standard either. Check your account for a subscription, stored payment method, or automatic renewal switch. A one-time purchase and a recurring subscription require different cancellation steps.
Avoid running out of data while traveling

- Set a phone warning below the package limit.
- Download maps, tickets, and hotel details offline.
- Keep a way to access the eSIM account without a verification text.
