Roaming outside Europe: costs with KPN, Odido, and Vodafone

Roaming outside Europe may come free from your subscription with KPN, Odido, or Vodafone, fall within a country pass, or be charged per MB. The continent alone therefore tells you little. First check your destination's provider zone and then the terms of your subscription.

Short advice: never use the unbundled MB rate without checking the price. Outside your included zone, disable data roaming on your regular SIM. Before departure, choose a provider package, prepaid travel eSIM, or local SIM. If desired, keep your regular SIM enabled for verification texts, but disable automatic mobile data switching.

The amounts below apply to consumer subscriptions covered by the current price lists mentioned. Older, business, and prepaid subscriptions may differ. Your personal provider app and welcome text remain authoritative.

The conclusion first: what is usually the best choice?

For most travelers, the order is simple: included allowance, suitable provider pass, travel eSIM, local SIM, and only as a last resort unbundled usage. A provider pass may be attractive if your own number is important for calls. A travel eSIM better suits data-intensive use or a journey through several countries.

Why “outside Europe” is not a roaming zone

Providers use their own country lists alongside the statutory EU and EEA rules. As a result, a country outside the European Union may still fall within your domestic allowance. Conversely, a European country may have a separate zone.

Several current examples show the difference:

• Switzerland falls under KPN's EU rate. With Odido, it is included only for selected Buitenland Plus subscriptions; for other current Hello subscriptions, it is Zone 1. Vodafone places Switzerland in Zone 1: EU.
• Turkey has dedicated international packages with KPN and is included in the non-EU allowance of selected KPN subscriptions. Odido includes Turkey in Buitenland Plus for selected Unlimited subscriptions; otherwise, it is Zone 2. Vodafone lists Turkey in Zone 1: EU.
• The United Kingdom is included in all three providers' own EU zones, even though it is not an EU member state.
• Albania has a dedicated KPN data package and is outside Odido's EU zone. Vodafone lists Albania in Zone 1: EU.

Never look only at “Europe,” “world,” or “outside the EU” in a product name. Search for the country itself and separately check islands, overseas territories, ferries, and satellite networks.

KPN roaming outside Europe

KPN uses a combination of an extended EU zone, special country packages, and the groups Supervoordeellanden, Voordeellanden, and Overige landen. Since April 30, 2026, several non-EU packages have become larger or cheaper, and new country packages have been added.

Which countries fall within KPN's EU zone?

In addition to EU countries, KPN applies its EU rate to Iceland, Norway, Moldova, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and the North Sea network Tampnet. There, you use your Dutch allowance according to your subscription terms.

The official KPN international page contains the current country finder. Search for an island or territory separately: a network in the air, at sea, or in an autonomous territory may have a different price.

Current KPN international packages

KPN increasingly sells a data package for each popular destination. These are current examples from the official country finder on July 17, 2026:

“MB/min/texts” is a shared credit: one MB, one calling minute, or one sent text uses one unit. Data-only packages do not include regular calling minutes or texts. KPN packages are not automatically valid at every subsequent destination, even if the price is the same. Check the country group before crossing a border.

Without a package, mobile internet costs €2.50 per MB according to KPN in most non-EU countries and more in some countries. KPN may block internet after a package through Bescherming Internetkosten. Calls and texts are not covered by that data block. The official KPN explanation for outside the EU shows unbundled rates, available packages, and partner networks by country.

Do you have KPN SuperUnlimited+? The current subscription includes 25 GB per month for selected destinations outside the EU, including the United States, Canada, Turkey, Morocco, the Caribbean part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Suriname, India, South Africa, Brazil, Albania, and Thailand. Check in MijnKPN whether this benefit belongs to your contract before enabling data.

Odido roaming outside Europe

Odido divides calls and texts outside the EU into Zones 1, 2, 3, and 4. For data, Odido sells Internet Op Reis by country. For current Hello rates, small amounts of unbundled data in Zones 2 and 3 are capped, but a pass provides a more useful data amount.

Odido zones and unbundled charges

Odido's EU zone contains the EU and EEA, the United Kingdom, the Faroe Islands, Moldova, Ukraine, and Tampnet on the North Sea. For regular current Hello subscriptions, Andorra, Monaco, and Switzerland are Zone 1. Turkey and the United States are Zone 2. Check the remaining classification by destination in the Odido App or by texting PRIJS <LAND> to 5545.

The current Odido Hello price list is valid from April 7, 2026. Calls outside the EU are charged per minute for these traffic flows; the exact price may also depend on the country you call.

Internet Op Reis: fixed price, amount varies by country

Odido uses fixed price and validity levels for Internet Op Reis, but the amount of data varies by destination. Not every country has all four passes.

On July 17, 2026, the M pass contains 6 GB in the United States, Singapore, and Qatar, 4 GB in Japan, 1 GB in Tanzania, and 500 MB in Belize. The XL pass contains 18 GB, 18 GB, 18 GB, 12 GB, 3 GB, and 1.5 GB respectively. Always view the amount next to the price on the official Odido page for travel outside the EU.

An Internet Op Reis pass applies to one country and one period. You can have several passes active alongside each other during a multi-country trip. The XL pass may be purchased before departure and starts immediately, so do not buy it unnecessarily early.

With Hello Unlimited Plus, Premium, and Snelst, Buitenland Plus may include data, calls, and texts in Switzerland, Turkey, and the United States. The current price list states a maximum of 75 GB for Plus and 100 GB for Premium and Snelst in the EU plus Buitenland Plus. Check your own contract because older Odido and Tele2 subscriptions may have different amounts or countries.

Vodafone roaming outside Europe

Vodafone uses three main groups: Zone 1 EU, Zone 2 World, and Zone 3 Exceptions. The Alles-in-1 Wereld Dagbundel works only in Zone 2 and is enabled by default at the start of a current consumer subscription.

Vodafone zones

In addition to the EU and EEA, Vodafone includes Albania, Andorra, Moldova, Monaco, Ukraine, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland in its current Zone 1. This is the provider's own choice; it does not mean all these countries legally fall under EU roaming.

Zone 2 contains the other countries not listed in Zone 1 or Zone 3. Zone 3 consists of exception countries and ship and airplane services. The price list includes Angola, Cuba, Ethiopia, Greenland, Iran, Kosovo, Lebanon, the Maldives, Namibia, Nepal, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, and Zimbabwe, among others.

Vodafone Wereld Dagbundels and unbundled rates

A Vodafone day runs from 00:00 to 23:59 Dutch time. The daily package is charged only if you use data, make or receive a call, or send a text. After the data limit, additional data costs €1.25 per MB. A new daily package may start automatically as soon as a data session is active on a new Dutch calendar day.

If you disable the daily package, Zone 2 costs €2.50 per MB, €1.25 per outgoing minute, €0.25 per incoming minute, and €0.25 per text. In Zone 3, data costs €7.50 per MB and an outgoing call costs €3.75 per minute. These amounts are in the official Vodafone price overview, valid from March 16, 2026.

Vodafone Unlimited Max includes 25 GB per month in Canada, the Caribbean part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Morocco, Suriname, the United States, and South Africa. At those destinations, a Wereld Dagbundel for Unlimited Max contains no additional MB because data already comes from the monthly allowance. Making calls, receiving calls, and sending texts may still activate the daily package.

Calculation examples: provider package or alternative?

Use these examples to understand the pricing structure. They are calculations based on official rates, not predictions of your final bill. Data stops and personal limits may intervene sooner.

Seven days in the United States

• KPN: 15 GB costs €24.99 and remains valid for 31 days. A SuperUnlimited+ customer may already have 25 GB of non-EU data.
• Odido: an M pass contains 6 GB for €15 and remains valid for 10 days. Buitenland Plus may already include the United States in the subscription.
• Vodafone: seven XXL days cost €105 for a maximum of 3.5 GB. Unlimited Max may include a 25 GB monthly allowance in the United States.

For a data-intensive week, a prepaid travel eSIM is often more logical than seven Vodafone daily packages unless Vodafone Unlimited Max already covers the destination. With KPN and Odido, the provider's own package may be competitive.

Ten days in Japan

• KPN: 5 GB costs €14.99; 10 GB costs €24.99.
• Odido: the M pass contains 4 GB for €15 and is valid for 10 days; the XL pass contains 12 GB for €30.
• Vodafone: Japan is in Zone 2. Ten XXL days cost €150 for a maximum of 5 GB.

Here, a travel eSIM or local SIM deserves serious comparison, especially with Vodafone. Compare not only euros per GB but also hotspot, network, 5G, validity, and the time the package starts.

Maps and messages only

Odido's unbundled data rate for current Hello subscriptions stops at 250 MB and €10 per billing month in Zones 2 and 3. That may be enough for economical use but not for photos, updates, or video. With KPN and Vodafone, 100 MB at €2.50 per MB mathematically equals €250 before a data limit intervenes. Use a package there or leave data disabled.

Alternatives to roaming through your Dutch provider

Travel eSIM

A travel eSIM is usually data-only and works alongside your regular SIM. You pay in advance, select a country or region, and avoid unbundled data usage on your home provider's bill. Check device support, activation time, hotspot, speed, and partner network.

Select the travel eSIM as the data line. Enable data roaming on that eSIM if the installation instructions require it, but leave roaming disabled on your regular SIM. The complete cost and convenience comparison is in eSIM versus roaming.

Local SIM card

A local SIM suits a long stay, many local calls, or a required local number. Purchasing may require identity registration, and you need to assess the terms in the local language. Your Dutch number remains reachable only if your device supports dual SIM or you switch SIMs.

Wi-Fi and offline preparation

Wi-Fi is useful as a backup, but public networks are not always secure or reliable. Download maps, tickets, translations, and entertainment before departure. For sensitive actions, use your own mobile connection or a trusted network.

Checklist before departure

1. Search for the exact country or territory with your provider; check stopovers and ferries too.
2. Note what your subscription already includes outside the EU.
3. Compare total price, GB, validity, outgoing calls, incoming calls, and texts.
4. Buy and confirm the selected package before enabling regular data roaming.
5. Disable automatic mobile data switching.
6. Save screenshots of the country list, price, and activation confirmation.
7. Download offline maps and disable photo backups and app updates over mobile data.
8. After landing, check the network name and welcome text before using data.
