Install or activate an eSIM: understand the difference
Learn the difference between buying, installing, and activating an eSIM, when validity starts, and what to do before departure and after arrival on a trip.

To install an eSIM is to add its digital SIM profile to your phone. To activate it can mean making the line ready or connecting it to a network; the provider decides when the paid validity period begins. Purchase, installation, activation, and first network connection can therefore be four separate moments.

Purchase, installation, and activation are different steps
After purchase, you usually receive a QR code, installation link, or manual details. These download the eSIM profile to the phone's secure SIM component. The download requires internet access. Apple explicitly states that setting up an eSIM requires an internet connection.
After that, Activating can refer to several events:
- the phone enables the new profile;
- the profile registers on a supported network for the first time;
- the provider marks the plan active in its system;
- the validity period or daily allowance begins.
These moments do not coincide for every provider. Read the product terms; the status shown by iPhone or Android does not explain when the paid validity period starts.
When does the validity period start?
There are three common start rules. A plan may begin at purchase, installation, or the first connection to a supported network. Some providers count calendar days in a particular time zone; others start a period such as 24 hours.
Check this before paying:

When should you install an eSIM for travel?
Installing before departure is convenient: you have stable Wi-Fi, access to the order email, and time to solve an error. After installation, keep the line off or leave data roaming disabled until you arrive. Use a clear label such as Thailand travel.
Wait when the provider explicitly states that installation starts the validity period. Also wait if the trip is far away and the QR code or plan has a limited installation window. Do not perform a test installation on another phone; many activation codes are tied to one profile and one installation.

How to activate the eSIM after arrival
Use this order after landing:
- Open the SIM or cellular network settings.
- Enable the travel eSIM.
- Select the travel eSIM for mobile data.
- Enable data roaming on the travel eSIM when instructed.
- Disable data roaming on the home SIM.
- Turn off automatic cellular data switching.
- Disable Wi-Fi and test a website.
An Activating status may remain visible outside the coverage area. It does not immediately mean that installation failed. At the destination, allow a few minutes for network registration and then follow activate an eSIM.
A QR code on the same phone or no Wi-Fi
On a recent iPhone, you can press and hold a QR code in a supported email or browser app and select Add eSIM. Apple documents this method for iOS 17.4 and later. Your provider may also supply an installation link, app, or manual SM-DP+ details.
Without any internet connection, the phone generally cannot download the profile. Install before departure or use trusted Wi-Fi at the destination. A screenshot of the QR code can be useful as a backup, but do not share it: the code grants access to your mobile profile and often works only once.
