How to install an eSIM on iPad: mobile data on a Cellular model

Add an eSIM to an iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular using a QR code or manual details. Select the plan and test mobile data without Wi-Fi.

An iPad on a table while mobile data is being set up for travel.

An eSIM only works on a compatible iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular model. Open Settings > Cellular Data, add a new plan, and scan the QR code. A Wi-Fi-only iPad cannot use an eSIM for mobile data.

HolySim advice: check the model number before buying, not just the product name. The same iPad series can include both Wi-Fi and Cellular versions.

Check whether your iPad is compatible

Open Settings > General > About. A Cellular model shows details such as an IMEI or EID and includes the Cellular Data menu. If these are missing, a software update cannot add cellular hardware.

Not every older Cellular model supports eSIM. Check the exact model with Apple and confirm that the HolySim destination and plan can be used on a tablet. A data-only eSIM can provide internet access to apps and Personal Hotspot when the plan permits tethering, but it does not turn the iPad into a regular phone line.

Add an eSIM on iPad

Apple explains the steps under set up cellular service on iPad. Menu names may differ slightly depending on the iPadOS version and the number of plans already installed.

  1. Connect the iPad to Wi-Fi.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Tap Cellular Data.
  4. Choose Add a New Plan or Other.
  5. Scan the HolySim QR code.
  6. Enter a confirmation code if one was included with the order.
  7. Wait for the plan to appear under your SIMs.

Use a laptop or phone to display the code. If the code is only available on the iPad, use the manual details when provided. In the scanning flow, tap the option to enter details manually and copy the SM-DP+ address and activation code exactly.

Select the correct plan

You can store multiple eSIM profiles on an iPad, but Apple states that the iPad uses one eSIM at a time. Open Settings > Cellular Data and tap the HolySim line to select it as the active plan.

Give the line a recognizable label. Turn on data roaming when the travel eSIM requires it and you are at a covered destination. Check when the plan starts before trying to connect while you are still at home.

Test the connection

Temporarily turn off Wi-Fi and open Safari. If 4G, LTE, or 5G appears and a new page loads, mobile data is working. If there is no connection, check that:

  • the eSIM is turned on;
  • the correct line is selected;
  • data roaming is enabled on the travel eSIM;
  • you are in a country or region covered by the plan;
  • Airplane Mode is off.

Do not delete the profile while troubleshooting coverage. If a network name is visible but websites do not load, troubleshoot the mobile data settings before changing the installed profile.

Personal Hotspot and calls

A Cellular iPad can offer Personal Hotspot when iPadOS, the provider, and the plan support it. Check Settings > Personal Hotspot. If the option is missing, the plan may restrict tethering or additional configuration may be required.

A HolySim data-only eSIM does not include a traditional mobile number for calls or SMS. FaceTime, WhatsApp, Teams, and other internet services can use the data plan.

Sources and editorial review

The iPad setup path and the one-active-eSIM limitation were checked against the Apple iPad User Guide. Model support and menu names can differ by iPadOS version and region. Plan terms determine roaming, Personal Hotspot availability, and activation timing. Content last reviewed on July 15, 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Does eSIM work on every iPad?

No. You need a supported Wi-Fi + Cellular model. A Wi-Fi-only iPad does not have the required cellular hardware.

Can I store multiple eSIMs on an iPad?

Yes. Supported models can store multiple profiles. According to Apple, you use one eSIM at a time.

Can I make calls with a HolySim eSIM on iPad?

You can make internet calls through apps. A data-only travel eSIM does not provide a regular mobile voice and SMS line.

Do I need to turn on roaming on the iPad?

Usually, yes, for a travel eSIM. Only enable data roaming on the profile you use for your trip.

Can I turn off the eSIM after my trip instead of deleting it?

Yes. Turning it off keeps the profile stored. Only delete it when you are sure you no longer need the plan or installation code.
