Vietnam eSIM: complete data guide for your trip

Everything about an eSIM for Vietnam: data plans, 5G, coverage from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, installation, WhatsApp, and hotspot use.

The limestone islands of Ha Long Bay as a recognizable travel image for Vietnam.

A trip through Vietnam often involves separate journeys: a domestic flight, night train, bus, taxi, and sometimes a scooter. Mobile data connects all these stages. It gives you access to tickets, addresses in Vietnamese, and the exact pickup point for your next ride.

HolySim advice: choose 10 GB for two weeks and 20 GB for a three-week trip from north to south with daily uploads.

Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City requires continuous access

During a fixed beach vacation, you can do a lot over hotel Wi-Fi. On a route through Ninh Bình, Huế, Hội An, and Đà Nẵng, you constantly change accommodations and transport providers. An eSIM keeps you from having to find Wi-Fi every time you arrive.

Still download tickets and addresses for offline use. A night bus will not wait because your inbox has no reception in a mountain pass.

Three networks, one partner per plan

Apple lists MobiFone, Viettel, and VinaPhone in its current carrier overview for Vietnam. A travel eSIM uses the network arranged by the provider; the name “Vietnam eSIM” does not tell you which of the three it uses.

Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Đà Nẵng, Huế, Hội An, and Nha Trang generally have good mobile coverage. The connection can vary in the mountains around Hà Giang and Sapa, national parks, and border regions. For an extensive northern route, the partner network therefore matters more than 5G in a major city.

Data for buses, trains, and scooters

Maps, translation tools, and booking apps use little data. A 5 GB plan can cover a short trip if you keep video on Wi-Fi. Ten GB suits two weeks of normal use. Twenty GB gives you room on a longer trip with social media, photo uploads, and occasional hotspot use.

Download an offline language pack and maps for mountain regions. Disable app updates and cloud backups over mobile data. On long train journeys, downloaded podcasts work better than continuous streaming.

A data eSIM does not change your phone number

WhatsApp remains linked to your existing number. Most travel plans do not include a Vietnamese phone number or regular calling minutes. Messaging apps are often useful for contacting hotels and drivers.

Keep your regular SIM active if you expect SMS verification codes, but turn off data roaming on that line. Calls through your home carrier can incur charges outside the EU.

Vietnam as part of a longer Asia trip

If you are also visiting Thailand, Japan, or Indonesia, compare a regional Asia eSIM. Check the country list and partner network for each destination. A large coverage count means little if one country on your route is missing.

Pay attention to when the validity period starts. A plan that activates on arrival in Bangkok must still be active when you enter Vietnam weeks later.

Set up before departure

Install the eSIM over Wi-Fi and name it Vietnam data. Save the QR code, APN, and support information outside your inbox. Check whether the validity period starts at installation or on the first local connection.

After landing, select the eSIM for data, enable data roaming on that profile, and leave network selection on automatic. Keep data roaming off on your regular SIM. Follow our iPhone eSIM steps or Android eSIM steps if the menus differ.

Reconnect after domestic travel

After a flight or a long period in Airplane Mode, registration can take a few minutes. Briefly turn Airplane Mode on once more, check the data line, and restart the device. Check the APN if you have reception but no internet.

Do not delete the eSIM. An installation code may be single-use. Manually selecting another network only works if your plan supports it.

Sources and editorial review

Vietnamese carrier names and supported iPhone features were checked with Apple. The GB recommendations are HolySim guidelines for a north-to-south trip using transport, map, and messaging apps. Mountain terrain and the partner network remain decisive for coverage. Content last reviewed on July 15, 2026.

Frequently asked questions about Vietnam eSIMs

Is 10 GB enough for two weeks in Vietnam?

It usually is for maps, transport apps, messaging, and normal social media use.

Does an eSIM work on the Hà Giang Loop?

Only where the partner network has coverage. Mountain passes and remote sections may temporarily have no signal.

Can I call a Vietnamese driver with the eSIM?

Not with a standard data-only plan. Use a messaging app or choose a product with a local number.

Does the same Asia eSIM work in Thailand?

Only if both Thailand and Vietnam are included in the product coverage.

Why can connecting after a flight take a while?

The phone must register again on a local partner network. This can take a few minutes.

Do I need to enable data roaming?

Usually, yes, on the travel eSIM. Leave this setting off on your regular SIM.
