In this guide
A UAE eSIM is useful for travelers going beyond Dubai. Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Ajman, and Umm Al Quwain are part of the same country, but your route can take you from a densely built city to mountain or desert areas. Check both the country coverage and the partner network.
HolySim advice: take 5 GB for a week of maps and messaging. Choose 10 GB for travel between emirates, frequent social media use, or business use.
One plan for seven emirates
A plan that lists the entire United Arab Emirates should work in Dubai and Abu Dhabi wherever the partner network has coverage. Check this explicitly. A product name that only mentions “Dubai” may be marketing language, while the technical coverage list is what counts.
For a trip combining a city visit, the beach, and a drive to Hatta or Fujairah, offline navigation is a useful backup. Mobile coverage outside cities is often good along main roads, but mountain and desert areas remain less predictable.
Which networks are available?
Apple lists du, e&, and Virgin Mobile as UAE carriers offering eSIM, LTE, and 5G support on iPhone. A travel eSIM uses its contracted partner and does not automatically provide access to every carrier.
Mobile coverage is generally strong in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and other built-up areas. The signal can weaken in parking garages, elevators, and large buildings. 5G access depends on the plan, phone, and location.
Internet calling follows separate rules
Internet voice and video calls are regulated according to the TDRA. The regulator lists services including Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and Google Meet for meetings, as well as BOTIM, among the permitted services.
An eSIM does not change these rules. WhatsApp messaging may work while WhatsApp Calling is unavailable. Arrange an approved meeting app before a business trip and check the current TDRA list.
Data for a vacation or workweek
Three to five GB is often enough for a short vacation using maps, taxi apps, and messaging. Ten GB gives you room for a week with frequent social media use. For daily video meetings or laptop use, 20 GB is a better fit.
Check the hotspot rules and speed limits. Business use requires not only enough GB, but also a plan that permits tethering.
A local number is a separate choice
Most UAE travel eSIMs only provide data. You do not receive an e& or du number or regular calling minutes. That is usually sufficient for WhatsApp messages and booking apps.
If you need a local number for work or verification, compare a local tourist SIM or subscription. Do not look at the data allowance alone.
Install before your first connection
Add the eSIM at home and name it UAE data. Check when the validity period starts and save the APN and support details offline.
On arrival, select the eSIM for mobile data and enable data roaming on that profile. Leave network selection on automatic and block data on your regular SIM. Follow our instructions to set up an eSIM on iPhone or set up an eSIM on Android.
If the line drops in another emirate
After a long drive, the phone may need to register again. Briefly turn Airplane Mode on and check that the correct data line is active. Then review the APN and plan coverage.
Do not delete the eSIM. A one-time QR code cannot be reused. Manually switching networks only helps when the plan allows more than one partner.

Frequently asked questions about UAE eSIMs
Does a Dubai eSIM also work in Abu Dhabi?
Yes, if the product coverage lists the entire UAE and the partner network has local coverage.
Can I send WhatsApp messages?
Messaging generally works over data. Voice and video calls are subject to separate local rules.
Which calling apps are permitted?
The TDRA publishes the current list. It includes Teams, Zoom, and Google Meet for meetings, as well as BOTIM.
Is 5 GB enough for a business trip?
It often is for email, messaging, and maps. Video meetings and hotspot use require a larger plan.
Do I get a UAE phone number?
Not with a standard data-only travel eSIM.
Does the eSIM work in the desert?
Only within range of the partner network. The signal may weaken outside built-up areas.
