In Thailand, you will usually want mobile data before your luggage reaches the carousel. A ride app, hotel message, or domestic connection will not wait until you have found a local SIM counter. With a pre-installed eSIM, your connection is ready as soon as your phone detects a Thai network.
HolySim advice: choose 10 GB for two weeks in Thailand. Take 20 GB if you watch a lot of video, go island-hopping without reliable Wi-Fi, or work remotely.
The first day determines your convenience
Tourist SIM cards are available at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang. They work well, but buying one takes time and often requires identification at the counter. You can arrange a travel eSIM at home. Your regular SIM stays in place, and after a long flight you only need to select the correct data line.
For a stay of several months, a local SIM may be cheaper. For a two- or three-week vacation, the price difference is often less important than having an immediate connection.
Bangkok, the north, and the islands
Apple lists AIS, dtac, and True as Thai carriers offering eSIM, LTE, and 5G support on iPhone. A travel eSIM uses a partner network and cannot necessarily switch to every Thai network.
Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Pattaya, and Krabi generally have good mobile coverage. On popular islands, data usually works around villages, ports, and resorts. The signal may disappear during boat trips, in quiet bays, and in mountainous or jungle areas.
Download your ferry ticket, hotel address, and arrival card before leaving. A screenshot is rarely affected by a tropical rainstorm or a bay without a cell tower.
Choose your plan for your travel style
A week in Bangkok and Chiang Mai with hotel Wi-Fi will often fit within 5 GB. For two weeks of daily ride apps, maps, messages, and social media, 10 GB is comfortable. With 20 GB, you can depend less on Wi-Fi and occasionally use a hotspot.
Unlimited plans may have a daily cap or reduced speed. Read the small print. “Unlimited” at low speed is not the same as watching unlimited high-quality video.
Download series and podcasts before departure. Restrict photo backups to Wi-Fi and postpone app updates until you are at the hotel.
WhatsApp stays the same, but you usually do not get a Thai number
Most travel eSIMs for Thailand are data-only. WhatsApp continues to work with your existing number, but you do not receive a local number for regular calls or SMS.
Apps and messages are often enough for taxis and hotels. If a particular service requires a Thai number, check a local tourist SIM or a plan that explicitly includes calls and SMS.
Combining Thailand with neighboring countries
If you continue to Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, or Indonesia, compare an Asia eSIM with separate country plans. Check every country in the coverage list. The name “Asia” does not guarantee that your entire route is included.
One regional profile means you do not need to open a new QR code at every airport. Pay attention to the total validity period and the amount of data shared across all countries.
Install before departure
Add the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi and name it Thailand data. Check whether the validity starts upon installation or upon the first connection in Thailand. Save the APN and instructions offline.

If you cannot connect on an island
First check whether other phones have a signal. If there is no local network, no setting can restore the connection. If a network is available, check the selected data line, data roaming, and APN.
Turn airplane mode on briefly and restart the phone. Do not delete the eSIM, because the installation code may only work once. Select a network manually only if your provider supports it.
