Do not immediately buy an eSIM for Spain. With a plan from an EU country, you will often already have EU roaming and use your regular allowance at domestic rates. First check how much data your carrier permits in Spain. Only then will you know whether an additional plan adds value.

When do you not need a Spain eSIM?
Spain is covered by the European “roam like at home” rules. With an eligible EU plan, data, minutes, and texts normally come out of your home allowance. This also applies during a regular vacation in the Balearic and Canary Islands.
“Unlimited” at home does not always mean unlimited abroad. Carriers may apply a fair-use limit to certain plans. Open your carrier's app and find the number of GB available for EU roaming. If that is enough for your whole trip, you are all set.
When does a separate plan make sense?
A Spain eSIM suits travelers without an EU plan, as well as people who quickly reach their fair-use limit. Examples include spending a month there during winter, making daily video calls, taking a working vacation, or using a tablet without its own plan.
If you continue from Spain into Portugal and France, a Europe eSIM may be more convenient. If you travel from Andalusia to Morocco, explicitly check whether both countries are in the same regional plan. A Europe plan does not automatically cover Morocco.
Choose data based on behavior, not vacation days
A weekend in Barcelona using maps and restaurant apps requires little data. One evening of HD video in an apartment can use more than all the navigation during that city break combined.
Allow 1 to 3 GB for light use. Five GB is generous for an average vacation week. For ten to fourteen days with social media and photo uploads, 10 GB is a better fit. If you work while traveling or share the connection with others, start at 20 GB.
Download series and music at home. Disable automatic video backups and check whether Instagram and TikTok load high-quality videos over mobile data.
From Madrid to the islands: what can you expect?
Apple lists Movistar, O2, Orange, and Vodafone, among others in its current carrier overview for Spain. A travel eSIM works through a partner network and does not automatically provide access to every Spanish carrier.
Mobile coverage is generally good in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Málaga, and the well-known coastal areas. The differences between networks can be greater in mountainous areas, nature reserves, and quiet parts of the interior. On islands, cities and resorts are usually well covered, but a remote bay remains a remote bay.
Be careful during a ferry crossing. At sea, a phone may switch to a satellite network that is not covered by EU pricing rules. Airplane mode is the safest option there.
Border areas require one extra check
Spain borders Andorra, which is not covered by mandatory EU roaming rules. Along the south coast and in Spanish territories close to Morocco, a phone may also detect a foreign network. Check the network name before using a lot of data.
A Spain-only travel eSIM does not prevent your regular SIM from switching to a more expensive network. Keeping data roaming disabled on your normal SIM therefore remains sensible, even when traveling within Europe.
Add extra data without losing your number
Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi. Name it Spain extra data and keep your regular SIM as the default for calls and texts. Select the eSIM only for mobile data. WhatsApp continues to work with your existing number.
Turn off automatic mobile data switching. If the eSIM temporarily has less coverage, you do not want the phone to use your other line without warning. Follow the plan's activation terms; validity may start at installation or upon the first Spanish network connection.

Problems that are particularly confusing in Spain
No data after landing? First check that the correct line is selected. A travel eSIM usually requires data roaming, even within Spain. Leave network selection on automatic unless the provider prescribes a specific choice.
If the internet works but is slow in a busy resort or stadium, the eSIM is not necessarily defective. Local network congestion, the partner network, and your location inside the building determine the speed. Do not delete the profile as the first solution.

Yes. The Canary Islands and Balearic Islands are part of Spain. Check the fair-use terms of your own plan.
Is 3 GB enough for a city break?
Usually, for maps, messaging, email, and some browsing. Video and automatic uploads can use 3 GB quickly.
Can I keep using my regular SIM for calls?
Yes. Set the eSIM for data and keep your regular SIM as the default line for calls and texts.
Does a Spain eSIM also work in Portugal?
Only if the plan explicitly covers Portugal. A country plan for Spain normally stops at the border.
Why is internet access on a ferry risky?
At sea, your phone may connect to a satellite network. This is not covered by normal EU roaming prices.
Should I delete the eSIM after my trip?
