South Korea eSIM: complete guide for Seoul, KTX, and Jeju

South Korea is a destination where a working data connection immediately becomes part of your travel routine. You look for a subway exit in Seoul, book a KTX train, translate a menu, and check the address of a guesthouse in Busan. An eSIM is therefore most convenient when it is already installed on your phone before departure.

HolySim advice: 10 GB suits a trip of ten to fourteen days with navigation, transport, translation, and daily social media use. Choose 20 GB if you share a lot of video, use a hotspot, or work outside hotels.

Start with the apps, not the number of gigabytes

Install the apps you will actually need before leaving home. The Korea Tourism Organization mentions KORAILTALK for trains and NAVER Map for directions, among others. According to VisitKorea, NAVER Map supports English and other languages. This makes the app more practical for international travelers than figuring out which mapping service works well after arrival.

Also save the Korean address of every accommodation as text and a screenshot. An English hotel name may be less precise in a taxi or search field than the Hangul address. Download an offline language pack in your translation app as well. Data helps a lot, but an empty battery or subway tunnel should not stop your planning.

How much data suits your trip to Korea?

For a five-day city break in Seoul, 5 GB is often enough when you use hotel Wi-Fi for backups and video. On a Seoul–Gyeongju–Busan route, usage rises faster: you look up more connections, open tickets, and upload more photos. Ten GB then provides comfortable headroom.

Jeju does not automatically require a larger plan, but a rental car and longer days away from your accommodation do. With 20 GB, you need to pay less attention to background usage. If you stream series during train journeys, download them over Wi-Fi in advance. Estimate your personal usage before buying.

Three networks, one partner for your travel eSIM

Apple lists KT, LG U+, and SK Telecom as South Korean carriers that support eSIM and prepaid activation for international travelers. A travel eSIM does not use all three without limits at the same time. The plan details state which partner network is available.

In Seoul, Busan, Incheon, and other major cities, you can generally expect modern mobile infrastructure. Underground stations, parking garages, mountain paths, and parts of ferry routes can still cause temporary interruptions. Download a route before entering a national park. 5G is convenient, but stable 4G is sufficient for maps, messaging, and tickets.

KTX, subway, and taxi without data stress

Open a digital train ticket before walking to the platform and take a screenshot. Connections can be congested at major stations when you want to quickly see your carriage and seat number. The same applies to the address of your next accommodation.

Seoul's stations are large, and exit numbers determine your walking route. Check not only the station name but also the exit number. Verification and payment support in taxi apps can change by app. Install a suitable app in advance and carry a second payment method; a data plan does not solve account or card-acceptance problems.

Keep your own number reachable

Most travel eSIMs are data-only. WhatsApp and other messaging services remain linked to your existing account. If you want to receive verification texts on your home number, keep that line enabled but disable data roaming on it.

Also turn off automatic mobile data switching. Otherwise, your phone may silently select the home line when the Korean signal is weak. Calls and texts through your home carrier may be charged separately even when mobile data correctly runs through the eSIM.

Install before departure

Scan the QR code over trusted Wi-Fi and give the profile a recognizable name, such as Korea data. Check when validity starts: immediately after installation or only upon the first connection in South Korea. Save the QR code, APN, and support details offline.

After landing, select the eSIM as the mobile data line and enable data roaming on that profile. This sounds contradictory, but a travel eSIM uses roaming to connect to its local partner. If in doubt, follow the steps in activate an eSIM.

If there is no internet after landing

First wait a few minutes and briefly enable airplane mode. Then check three things: is Korea data selected, is roaming enabled on that line, and does the APN match the instructions? Leave network selection on automatic unless your plan explicitly prescribes a carrier.

Do not delete the profile as your first attempt. A QR code may be single-use. Take screenshots of the status bar and settings and use them when contacting support. Work through the line, roaming, APN, and network checks systematically.
