Install and use an eSIM on a Windows laptop

Check whether your Windows laptop supports eSIM, install a profile by QR or activation code, and control mobile data use for work and travel on every trip.

An eSIM works on a Windows laptop only when the device has both a built-in cellular modem and eSIM support. Wi-Fi, a SIM slot or Windows 11 alone is not enough. If Settings > Network & internet contains Cellular and an eSIM profiles option, you can add a compatible data profile from a supported provider.

Short answer: check the hardware first and provider compatibility second. Install the profile through a trusted website, QR code or activation code, then keep the connection metered when your allowance is limited.

Can every Windows laptop use an eSIM?

No. The laptop must support cellular connectivity and contain an eUICC for eSIM profiles. The same product family may include Wi-Fi-only versions as well as LTE or 5G versions. Check the exact model and type number; the commercial product name is too broad.

Microsoft lists three requirements: a PC with cellular support, a selectable eSIM and a valid profile. See use an eSIM for cellular data in Windows.

A QR code cannot add missing cellular hardware. Use a phone hotspot or external modem in that situation.

How to check eSIM support in Windows

  1. Open Start > Settings > Network & internet.
  2. Look for Cellular.
  3. Open the page and find Use this SIM for cellular data.
  4. Check whether eSIM, SIM 2 or eSIM profiles appears.
  5. Compare the exact laptop model with the manufacturer's specifications.
  6. Ask the eSIM provider whether the plan supports laptops and the device IMEI.

Cellular is missing entirely

Windows has probably not detected a suitable modem. Check Device Manager, manufacturer drivers and any physical wireless switch. Do not buy a profile until the manufacturer confirms that this exact version supports cellular data and eSIM.

Install an eSIM profile on Windows

Connect the laptop to trusted Wi-Fi first. Go to Settings > Network & internet > Cellular > eSIM profiles and choose to add a profile. Depending on Windows version, device and provider, Windows can search for a profile or accept a QR or activation code.

Enter an EID, IMEI or activation detail only on the official website of the provider or organisation. Microsoft warns that a deleted profile may require provider assistance before it can be added again. Also read install or activate an eSIM.

The QR code is on the same laptop

Display the code on a second trusted screen or use manual entry if Windows supports it. Do not send the QR code to a public printer or chat: it may act as a one-time key to the mobile profile.

Connect and switch between profiles

Select the required profile under eSIM profiles and choose Use. With several profiles, stop using the active one before enabling another. A stored profile is not automatically active, and several profiles do not combine their speeds.

Give profiles recognisable names such as Work, Personal or the destination country. Before switching, record which APN, roaming setting and allowance belong to each profile. EID, ICCID and SM-DP+ explained helps when contacting support.

Limit mobile data use on the laptop

A laptop can use substantial data for updates, cloud synchronisation and video calls. Windows treats cellular broadband as metered by default, but verify the setting yourself. Microsoft explains that it can restrict some background updates and syncing in metered connections.

Pause large downloads, offline synchronisation and automatic high-quality video. Review data usage per app and check both Windows and the provider portal, because their measurement times may differ.

Fix no internet after installation

Check the active profile, allowance status, data roaming, coverage and automatic APN in that order. Restart the cellular connection before deleting the profile. A company-managed PC may enforce policies that prevent you from adding, switching or deleting profiles.

For support, capture the exact error and note the Windows version, laptop model, network name, EID or ICCID, and country. Never publish the full activation code in a forum.

Sources and editorial review

The menus and requirements were checked against Microsoft documentation. Names vary by Windows version, language, laptop manufacturer and provider. HolySim cannot guarantee that every phone profile is accepted on a laptop or modem; verify device and plan compatibility before purchase. Last editorial review: 26 July 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Does a normal travel eSIM work on every Windows laptop?

No. The laptop needs a compatible cellular modem and eSIM hardware, and the provider must accept the device and use case. Check whether Windows displays eSIM profiles and ask about laptop compatibility. A QR code designed for a phone does not automatically work on every PC.

Can I add eSIM to a laptop without Cellular settings?

Not with software alone. If there is no cellular modem, Windows cannot connect directly to a mobile network. Share your phone's connection by hotspot or use a compatible external modem. On a business laptop, also confirm whether IT permits external cellular hardware.

Can I store several eSIM profiles in Windows?

Compatible devices can store multiple profiles and switch between them. You generally use one cellular profile at a time for data. The exact number and controls depend on hardware, Windows version, provider and organisation policy. Delete a profile only when you know it can be reinstalled.

Why does the provider request an EID and IMEI?

The EID identifies the eSIM hardware, while the IMEI identifies the cellular modem or device. A provider may use them to verify compatibility and activation. Share them only through an official trusted channel; they are unique device identifiers even though they are not passwords.

Should data roaming be on for a Windows travel eSIM?

Often yes when the profile uses a partner network, but follow the provider's instructions. Enable roaming only for the intended travel profile and monitor the allowance. The label roaming does not automatically mean out-of-bundle fees with a prepaid travel plan.
