In Morocco, mobile data is especially useful for finding the final five hundred meters. Google Maps brings you to the medina, but the riad's address, a message from the host, and a saved photo of the door often do the rest. A preinstalled eSIM makes that information available upon arrival.

Why you should save a riad's address offline
Streets in old medinas do not always make sense to digital maps. Save the name, phone number, and a recognizable landmark for your accommodation as a screenshot. Mobile data helps you contact the host, but a narrow alley or thick wall can weaken the signal.
On a tour, data is also useful for route changes, fuel stops, and accommodation messages. Download the complete driving route before entering the High Atlas or a desert area.
Morocco's three networks
Apple lists inwi, Maroc Telecom, and Orange Maroc as Moroccan carriers with eSIM and LTE support on iPhone. Your travel eSIM uses the partner associated with its plan.
Mobile coverage is generally good in Marrakech, Casablanca, Rabat, Fez, Tangier, and Agadir. The Moroccan government reported 4G population coverage of 98.63% for March 2024. Population coverage is not the same as geographic coverage: sparsely populated mountains and desert routes can still have no signal.
5G exists, but buy with 4G expectations
Maroc Telecom launched its commercial 5G service on November 7, 2025. A travel eSIM only receives 5G when the plan, partner network, phone, and location support it.
If the product terms do not clearly state 5G, expect 4G. That is more than sufficient for messaging, translation, and route planning.
Data for a city, road trip, and work
A weekend in Marrakech or Fez often fits within 1 to 3 GB. Five GB is enough for normal use during one week. Ten GB is a better fit for a two-week road trip with daily maps and photo uploads. Work and video require 20 GB or more.
Download music and series at home. Disable automatic backups over mobile data. Offline maps do more than save data: they also work where there is no cell tower.
eSIM or a local Moroccan SIM?
A travel eSIM wins on convenience at arrival. You do not need to find a shop and keep your own SIM card in the phone. Most plans provide data only and no Moroccan number.
A local SIM can be attractive for a long stay, heavy data usage, or when you need a local number. In exchange, you must buy and register it locally. For a one-week holiday, the time difference is often more decisive than a small price difference.
Roaming in Morocco with KPN, Odido, and Vodafone compared
Morocco is outside the statutory EU roaming zone. An exception in your contract or a separate pass can lower the price, but unbundled data usage is risky without such an arrangement.

Practical conclusion: for a normal one-week holiday, Odido's M pass looks strong on paper when 6 GB is enough. KPN offers a longer validity period, but you must check the available amount and price for your connection. Vodafone Unlimited Max can make your home plan the best choice; without that benefit, daily passes become expensive over several days. Always compare your own contract with the current HolySim plans for Morocco, because a smaller travel eSIM is not automatically cheaper.

WhatsApp and your existing number
WhatsApp remains linked to your Dutch or Belgian number while the eSIM supplies data. Do not accept a number change when the app asks.
Keep your regular SIM active if you want to receive verification texts, but disable data roaming on that line. Regular calls through your home carrier may be charged at non-EU rates.
Install before departure
Scan the QR code at home over Wi-Fi and name the profile Morocco data. Check whether validity starts on installation or on the first network connection in Morocco. Save the APN and support details offline.

When the medina has signal but no data
Check the data line, data roaming, and APN. Briefly enable airplane mode and restart. Test near a window or outside; old walls can block radio signals.
Do not delete the eSIM while testing. A QR code may be single-use. Take screenshots of the settings before contacting support.
