Mexico eSIMcomplete guide for Yucatán, Mexico City and beyond

A Mexico trip happens in two worlds. At the resort and the hostel, wifi is a given; beyond them, in the colectivo to Tulum, at the taco stand and on the way to a cenote, you depend on mobile data. That is exactly where relying on roaming goes wrong: Mexico sits outside every EU allowance.

Why you should not sort this out on arrival

Grabbing a SIM card after landing in Mexico means queueing at a counter or hunting for an OXXO while your suitcase is still on the belt. The taxi apps you need at that exact moment do not work yet.

The other way round works better: order the eSIM at home, pay securely and put it on your phone in advance. When you land in Cancún or Mexico City, you tap the data line on and book your ride before you step outside.

Telcel, AT&T and who carries your bundle

Mexico has three nationwide networks: Telcel, AT&T and Movistar. Travel eSIMs run on one or more of them as partner networks; the bundle details show which ones yours uses.

Along the entire Riviera Maya, in Mérida, Oaxaca and Mexico City, any major network serves you well. The difference is in the stretches in between: on bus days through sparsely populated country, no operator covers everything.

Where your data actually goes

The big items differ from home: booking rides, checking routes in an unfamiliar city, translating menus and signs, and sharing photos the moment something beautiful passes by. Expect 300 to 500 MB per active day outside the resort.

Streaming belongs on your accommodation's wifi; that keeps a 5 to 10 GB bundle comfortably within budget. The travel data guide works out your exact pattern.

Cenotes, ruins and bus days

At Chichén Itzá and the well-known cenotes, reception is often fine at the entrance and thin in the field around it. On the ADO bus between cities the signal regularly disappears for hours. No problem, as long as tickets, bookings and today's route are stored offline in advance.

Your eSIM picks the network back up automatically as soon as there is coverage; nothing to do on your side.

Continuing to Guatemala or Belize

Many Yucatán trips end at Tikal or on Caye Caulker. A Mexico bundle stops at that border unless Guatemala or Belize is on your bundle's country list. Check before you buy, or install a second per-country bundle at home in advance.

Setting up before your flight

Add the eSIM at home on wifi and name it something like Mexico data. After landing, select that line for mobile data and enable data roaming on that profile only; your regular SIM stays reachable for text codes with roaming off.
