Japan eSIM: complete guide to data during your trip

In Japan, you mainly use mobile data to get to the right place. Train operators, station exits, and addresses require more preparation than in the average European city. A pre-installed eSIM removes friction exactly where you need it.

Why Japan is about more than hotel Wi-Fi

Hotel Wi-Fi does not help when you are looking for the correct exit at Shinjuku Station. While traveling, you want access to current train routes, a translation app, and the Japanese address of your accommodation. Reservations and digital tickets are also often stored in your email or browser.

A travel eSIM provides that connection without an additional device. Pocket Wi-Fi remains an alternative for groups, but it has to be collected, charged, carried, and returned. For one phone, an eSIM is usually simpler.

Data for your travel pace

If you leave early, travel frequently by train, and use hotel Wi-Fi in the evening, 5 GB can last for a two-week trip. Daily photo uploads and social media make 10 GB a more logical choice. Choose 20 GB or more if you watch videos, work, or regularly share a hotspot while traveling.

Download Japanese for offline use in your translation app and save maps of your destinations. The Shinkansen is an excellent place to watch downloaded films. High-quality streaming is mainly a quick way to use up a small plan.

Which Japanese networks will you encounter?

Apple lists au, NTT Docomo, Rakuten Mobile, and SoftBank as Japanese carriers offering eSIM and LTE support on iPhone. The partner network of your travel eSIM determines the coverage you actually use.

Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya, Fukuoka, and Sapporo generally have strong mobile coverage. The connection remains usable along many railway lines, but tunnels interrupt the signal. In mountainous areas, national parks, and on small islands, the differences between networks can become greater.

A 5G label is a welcome extra, but it should not be your only selection criterion. Reliable 4G along your route is more useful than high speed in a single station square.

eSIM or pocket Wi-Fi?

Choose an eSIM if each traveler mainly uses their own phone. There is no extra device to carry in your day bag, and no one loses contact with the group because the pocket Wi-Fi is in somebody else's jacket.

Pocket Wi-Fi can suit a family with several devices and a generous shared data allowance. An eSIM that permits hotspot use often provides the same advantage, but it drains the phone's battery faster.

Calls, WhatsApp, and local reservations

Most Japanese travel eSIMs are data-only. WhatsApp, FaceTime, and Signal continue to work with your existing account, but you do not receive a Japanese number. That can be inconvenient when a small restaurant only accepts reservations by phone.

Keep your regular SIM active if you want to receive verification texts. Disable data roaming on that line. Incoming and outgoing calls through your home carrier may result in out-of-plan charges.

Install before the flight, but do not start too early

Scan the QR code at home over Wi-Fi and name the profile Japan data. First read when the validity period starts. Some plans start upon the first connection to a Japanese network, while others start immediately after installation.

After arrival, select Japan data for mobile data and enable data roaming on that profile. Automatic switching to your regular SIM should be turned off. Save the APN and installation code offline.

No data at Narita or Haneda?

Give the eSIM a few minutes after landing. Turn airplane mode on briefly, then check the selected data line, data roaming, and APN. Leave network selection on automatic unless your provider specifies a network.

Do not delete the profile. A one-time QR code cannot always be scanned again. First take screenshots of the settings and use them when contacting support.
