“Does this eSIM work in Bali?” is the easy question. The better question is whether it also works on the other islands along your route. Indonesia is an archipelago; a good experience in Denpasar says little about coverage on Flores, Sulawesi, or a boat between islands.
HolySim advice: choose 10 GB for two weeks in Bali. Take 20 GB and check the partner network when visiting several islands or working remotely.
Bali is not all of Indonesia
Apple lists Indosat, Telkomsel, and XLSMART in its current carrier overview for Indonesia. Your travel eSIM uses one partner network. That network can be strong in Bali but have less coverage on another island.
Jakarta, Surabaya, Denpasar, and busy tourist areas generally have good mobile internet. Mountains, jungle, small islands, and long boat routes are less predictable. Do not only check whether a plan covers “Indonesia”; also check which network operates behind it.
Download maps, tickets, and accommodation details before every crossing. At sea, mobile data only works while a land-based network remains within range.
What uses data in Bali?
Gojek or Grab, messaging, and maps use little data. Video, photo backups, and working on a laptop are the major consumers. A 5 GB plan can be enough for a week of light use. Ten GB suits two weeks of normal vacation use. Twenty GB is more sensible for video calls, uploads, and hotspot use.
Wi-Fi quality varies between villas and guesthouses. If you need to work, do not rely on a single fixed connection. Check whether the eSIM permits hotspot use and whether speed is reduced after a daily limit.
Travel eSIM or local SIM card?
A travel eSIM wins on preparation. You install it at home and can be online immediately after landing. A local SIM may be cheaper for a long stay or very high data use, but requires purchase and registration on arrival.
For a short vacation, the time saved is often worth more than the last price difference per GB. For three months of living and working in Bali, the calculation may be different.
You do not automatically get a local number
Most Indonesia eSIMs for travelers only provide data. WhatsApp remains linked to your existing number. An Indonesian phone number for calls or SMS is usually not included.
Check in advance whether local services on your route require an Indonesian number. Internet messaging is often sufficient for hotel contact and ride apps, but app terms can change.
One Asia profile for several countries
If you combine Indonesia with Thailand, Singapore, or Vietnam, an Asia eSIM may be more convenient than separate profiles. Confirm that each country is explicitly listed and that the validity continues from the first country onward.
A regional plan normally shares the data allowance across the entire trip. Keep enough GB for the final country; the counter does not automatically reset at the border.
Install without starting the plan too early
Add the eSIM at home and name it Indonesia data. Before installation, read when the validity period starts. Save the QR code, APN, and support details offline.
After arrival, select this profile for mobile data and enable data roaming. Leave network selection on automatic at first. Turn off automatic switching to your regular SIM. The menus are explained in our guides to set up an eSIM on iPhone and set up an eSIM on Android.
No network after a ferry or domestic flight
Give the phone a few minutes to register on a new network. Briefly turn Airplane Mode on and check that the eSIM is still selected as the data line. Then check the APN.
Do not delete the profile. A QR code may be tied to a single installation. Without local coverage, manually switching networks will not help either; only try it when the provider permits several networks.

Frequently asked questions about Indonesia eSIMs
Does a Bali eSIM also work in Lombok?
Only if the plan covers all of Indonesia and the partner network has coverage there.
How much data do I need for three weeks in Indonesia?
Ten to twenty GB suits most multi-stop trips. Choose more for frequent video, work, or hotspot use.
Do I need a local number for Gojek or Grab?
App terms can change. A standard travel eSIM usually does not include an Indonesian phone number.
Does mobile data work on a boat?
Only while a land-based cell tower remains within range. The signal can disappear farther out at sea.
Is hotel Wi-Fi in Bali sufficient for work?
It varies widely by accommodation. An eSIM with hotspot support is a useful backup, but it does not guarantee coverage inside every building.
Can I reinstall the eSIM profile?
Not always. Only delete the profile after the trip or when support advises it.
