China eSIMcomplete guide to data, apps, and device checks

For China, choosing an eSIM does not start with 5 or 10 GB but with three checks: does your exact device support eSIM, does the product cover mainland China, and which internet services are accessible through that plan? Answering these questions before departure prevents the most difficult problems after landing.

HolySim advice: choose 10 GB for a trip of one to two weeks using maps, translation, payments, and messaging. Take 20 GB for daily video, hotspot use, or a long round trip. Install every essential app and the eSIM profile before departure.

Mainland China is not Hong Kong or Macao

A plan for “China” must explicitly list mainland China. Hong Kong and Macao have their own mobile networks and are often treated as separate destinations in data plans. A Shanghai–Hong Kong flight or a side trip from Shenzhen may therefore require a regional Asia plan.

Read the country list literally. Do not rely on a map, flag, or product title. Also check whether hotspot use, top-ups, and 5G are available; these features can differ by plan and partner network.

Pay particular attention to where your phone was purchased

Regional device versions make a major difference in China. Apple states that only specific iPhone models currently support local Chinese eSIM profiles in mainland China. A device purchased in China may also have different eSIM capabilities from a European device.

An international travel eSIM and a local Chinese carrier eSIM are not the same product. Check the model number, purchase region, and the Add eSIM option in Settings. Use our compatibility guide and ask for confirmation for your exact version before buying if in doubt.

Internet access is a separate product feature

Chinese authorities restrict access to various foreign websites and apps. UK government travel information warns that internet access in China is controlled and certain services are permanently blocked. The way an international eSIM routes data differs by provider.

Do not ask only “does the eSIM work in China?” but also “which apps work with this specific plan?” Do not assume that every travel eSIM provides the same access. Download essential documents, contacts, and translations offline. For privacy or circumvention services, check current local rules; a data plan is not legal advice or a guarantee of access.

Data for maps, translation, and payments

For a week in Beijing or Shanghai, 5 GB suits light use. On a route through several cities, you use more data for train tickets, rides, translation, and location details. Ten GB is then a safe middle choice. Twenty GB is better suited to video, cloud uploads, or working while traveling.

Digital payments through apps are important in China. Set up accounts and payment methods before departure and carry an alternative. A working internet connection does not resolve identity checks, card acceptance, or a foreign verification text. Also save hotel and station addresses in Chinese characters.

Coverage on high-speed rail and outside cities

Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and other major urban areas have extensive mobile networks. On high-speed trains, a phone may switch rapidly between towers; tunnels and mountain routes remain possible interruptions. In sparsely populated regions, practical coverage depends more strongly on the partner network and route.

Download your ticket, passport copy, address, and onward route before boarding. 5G is useful for large files but not required for navigation or messaging. A stable 4G connection on the right partner network provides more value while traveling.

Install before entering China

Scan the QR code at home over Wi-Fi and name the profile China data. Check when activation starts and save the installation code, APN, and support channel offline. This is particularly important because access to your email or the provider's website may work differently after arrival than at home.

Enable the eSIM according to the instructions. After arrival, select it as the mobile data line, activate roaming on that profile, and turn off automatic data switching. You can keep your home line active for verification texts, but prevent that line from using mobile data.

WhatsApp, texts, and a local number

A data-only eSIM does not change your existing number. Whether a particular messaging service is accessible through the Chinese network depends on the service and how the plan routes traffic. Check this for the specific product instead of relying on general eSIM promises.

A Chinese number may be required for local account registration. An international data plan usually does not provide one. If calls or texts are not explicitly included in the product, assume it provides data only.

No data after arrival

Give the profile a few minutes to find a partner network. Then check the selected data line, roaming, and APN. Briefly enable airplane mode and leave network selection on automatic unless your provider names a specific carrier.

Do not delete the eSIM. Downloading it again may be more difficult, and the QR code may be single-use. Record the status messages and test both a regular website and the app you are unsure about; a blocked service does not automatically mean that all mobile data is unavailable.
