Canada requires an offline-first plan. An eSIM helps in cities and along many major routes, but it cannot solve the enormous distances between cell towers. Download maps and travel details before driving toward the Rockies, national parks, or the north.

Coverage in Canada depends on your route
Apple lists Bell, Rogers, and Telus in its current Canadian carrier overview. Travel eSIMs use a partner network, so the same phone in the same location may have different coverage with two different plans.
Major cities and the busiest traffic corridors generally have good mobile internet. The signal can disappear in the Rockies, northern provinces, national parks, and on long rural stretches. A coverage map for your route tells you more than a general promise of “Canada coverage.”
Save addresses, reservation numbers, fuel stops, and the route to your next accommodation offline. This is particularly useful when you will not arrive until after dark.
How many GB fit your provincial itinerary?
A week in Toronto or Montréal requires 3 to 5 GB with normal use. For two weeks of driving between Vancouver, Jasper, and Banff, 10 GB is a better fit. Choose 20 GB if you upload many photos, make video calls, or share the connection with a laptop.
Maps and messaging use relatively little data. Streaming and automatic cloud backups can drain a plan. Download entertainment over Wi-Fi and temporarily disable photo backups.
Canada and the United States in one trip
If you cross the US border during your trip, do not choose a Canada-only plan. A North America eSIM can cover both countries, but check the country list and partner networks.
One regional profile is more convenient than trying to find a new QR code at the border. Confirm that the validity period covers the entire trip and that hotspot use is permitted in both countries.
An eSIM is not a satellite connection
Marketing language such as “nationwide coverage” does not mean every hiking trail has reception. An eSIM uses regular mobile cell towers. Without a local radio signal, there is no data connection.
For remote hikes or drives, route planning, emergency information, and offline maps should not exist only in the cloud. Your phone battery deserves as much attention as the data plan in those areas.
Keep your Dutch or Belgian SIM under control
Canada is outside the EU roaming zone. An international pass from your own carrier may be useful, but compare the allowance, daily price, and validity. Daily rates add up quickly on a three-week vacation.
Keep your regular SIM active if you want to receive SMS verification codes. Turn off data roaming on that line and select the Canada eSIM for data. WhatsApp remains linked to your existing number.
Install at home and connect on arrival
Scan the QR code over Wi-Fi and name the profile Canada data. Check when the validity period starts. Save the installation details offline, because you do not want to retrieve them from an inbox without a connection.

What to do when the signal bars are empty
Check your location first. In a parking garage or outside the covered area, changing the APN will not help. If other phones have a signal, check the selected data line, roaming setting, and APN.
Briefly turn Airplane Mode on and restart the phone. Do not delete the eSIM profile; reinstallation may be blocked by a one-time QR code.
