Can you call 112 with a data-only eSIM?

In the European Union, you can call 112 free of charge from a mobile phone, but a data-only travel eSIM is not itself a regular voice service. Whether the emergency call connects depends on your phone, available cellular coverage, local network rules, and an enabled cellular radio. Do not rely on internet calling as your only emergency option, and keep your home SIM active when safe and affordable.
Important: 112 is for real emergencies. Never place a test call. Before travel, check your device settings, local emergency numbers, coverage, and the emergency information available from your lock screen.
Does 112 work with an eSIM?
An eSIM can support voice, SMS, and data, but the subscription determines which services are included. Many travel eSIMs are data-only and therefore do not provide a normal cellular voice line. That does not automatically mean the device can never place an emergency call: the phone and network handle emergency calls separately.
The European Commission confirms that 112 is free throughout the EU from fixed and mobile phones. Other numbers and rules apply outside the EU. Check official travel guidance or the local government for your destination.

What happens if your home SIM has no service?
For an emergency call, a phone may try to use an available permitted mobile network even when your normal carrier is not shown. The screen may display SOS, Emergency calls only, or similar wording. This is not a guarantee: without coverage from any usable network, a normal cellular emergency call cannot connect.
Can you call 112 without an active plan or credit?
112 is free in the EU, so ordinary call credit is not the condition. Calling without an active SIM or with a locked SIM still varies by country, network, and device. Do not assume every phone works everywhere without a SIM. Keep a working line active when possible and know local alternatives.
Does 112 work in airplane mode?
Not while the cellular radio is off. Turn off airplane mode before placing a cellular emergency call. Google also states that Emergency SOS on Pixel does not work in airplane mode. During a flight, report an emergency directly to the crew rather than trying to dial a mobile number yourself.
How to prepare your phone for an emergency
Complete this check before departure, not during an incident:
- Find the official emergency number for your destination; save local numbers as well as 112 where applicable.
- Add medical information and emergency contacts to the lock screen.

- Keep the phone charged and carry a power bank.
- Give your home SIM and travel eSIM clear labels.
- Make sure you have not accidentally disabled every cellular line.
- Keep your address, accommodation, and travel insurance number available offline.

Put emergency information on the lock screen
On iPhone and Android, you can make medical details and emergency contacts available without fully unlocking the device. Include only information responders genuinely need, such as relevant conditions, allergies, and a contact person. After a software update, check that the details remain visible and current.
Sharing location during an emergency call
Modern phones and networks can pass location information during an emergency call. Google describes Android Emergency Location Service, which can automatically send a location to responders when supported by the country and network. See emergency help on a Pixel phone.
Still state your location when possible: country, city, street, landmark, and floor. Automatic location may be unavailable, inaccurate, or unsupported by the local public safety answering point.
Can an emergency app or satellite feature replace 112?
Not as a general rule. Emergency apps, real-time text, and satellite functions are available only on certain devices and in certain countries and networks. What should you do when the phone shows Emergency calls only?
In a real emergency, call the local emergency number immediately. Do not first delete the eSIM or spend time on extensive network troubleshooting. Move only if it is safe and seek a place with better reception. Ask another person or nearby staff to alert help in parallel.
If there is no emergency and you want to restore service, check airplane mode, active lines, and coverage. Then use no service with eSIM for ordinary troubleshooting.
