Using eSIM
Business and personal lines on one phone with eSIM
Separate business and personal lines with eSIM and Dual SIM, configure data, calls and texts, and understand the limits of privacy and management at work.
In this guide
With eSIM and Dual SIM, you can use a business and personal line on one compatible phone. You choose a preferred line for mobile data, calls and messages, but the phone remains one shared device with the same apps, storage and security. Two numbers provide practical separation, not complete isolation between your employer and private life.
Best setup: give both lines clear labels, select one fixed data line, verify the outgoing number before every call and agree with your employer who owns the device, number, profile and account.
How do business and personal eSIM lines work together?
A phone with Dual SIM Dual Standby can keep two lines reachable, depending on the model and providers. One line may use a physical SIM and the other an eSIM, or the phone may support two active eSIMs. Only one line is generally the default for mobile data.
Apple explicitly lists a business and personal number as a Dual SIM use case. See using Dual SIM with an eSIM. Google lets compatible Pixel models set SIM preferences for calls, messages and data in Dual SIM on Pixel.
One phone or two phones compared
| Topic | One Dual SIM phone | Two separate phones |
|---|---|---|
| Carrying and charging | One device | Two devices |
| Choosing a number | Requires settings and attention | Physically obvious |
| Apps and files | Shared device space | More strongly separated |
| Switching off availability | Disable the business line | Turn off the work phone |
| Employer management | May affect personal use | Business management remains separate |
| Loss or failure | Both lines affected together | One line may remain available |
Choose two devices when legal, security or availability rules require strict separation.
Set up both lines clearly
- Check that the phone, providers and carrier lock support the combination.
- Install or insert the second line through the official provider process.
- Assign labels such as
BusinessandPersonal. - Choose the default mobile data line.
- Set preferences for calls and messages.
- Where possible, select a preferred number for each contact.
- Make a test call and send a test message from both lines.
- Check voicemail, Wi-Fi calling and call forwarding.
Follow set up Dual SIM for device menus, and enable automatic data switching only when you understand the possible costs.
Which line provides mobile data?
The configured data line normally supplies internet to every app, regardless of the number used for a call. Some phones can temporarily use the calling line for data during a conversation. This behaviour and Wi-Fi calling vary by model, software and provider.
Avoid number mistakes in calls and messages
Check the line label before starting a new conversation. A phone may remember the last line used for a contact, so a later call does not necessarily follow your general default. Send a test SMS to a colleague and personal contact before relying on the setup.
Apps such as WhatsApp, Signal and Teams do not automatically map accounts to both SIM labels. Their number and account settings are separate from the cellular data line. Read calls and texts with an eSIM for data-only profiles.
Business availability outside working hours
You can temporarily turn off the business line without deleting its eSIM profile. First check what happens to voicemail, call forwarding, authentication codes and emergency contacts. A disabled line cannot receive ordinary calls or SMS until it is active again.
Use Focus or Do Not Disturb modes to limit notifications, but remember that these are not provider blocks. Agree response windows with your employer; technical reachability does not itself create a permanent obligation to be available.
Privacy and device management on one phone
Two lines do not separate photos, browser history, contacts or app data. Use a work profile, Mobile Device Management or separate apps when required by the organisation. Before enrolling, read which information the administrator can inspect, erase or enforce.
Keep recovery codes and provider details outside the phone. After loss, both lines may need blocking. A device that an employer can erase remotely is not automatically suitable as the only storage location for personal information.
Who owns the business number?
Document whether you or the organisation owns the number and eSIM, and what happens when employment ends. A profile cannot always be transferred without provider action. Do not delete the business profile until IT or the provider confirms number retention and transfer.
Business travel eSIM beside a personal number
Choose the travel eSIM as the data line and keep the personal number active only for necessary calls or SMS when roaming costs allow. Disable data roaming on home lines that must not use foreign data. Check the bill and allowance for every line.
A data-only travel eSIM does not replace a business phone number. Apps can continue working over its data connection, but ordinary calls and SMS still use the relevant voice line.
Sources and editorial review
Dual SIM behaviour was checked against Apple and Google documentation. Active line combinations, 5G, Wi-Fi calling, data during calls, management and number transfer vary by device, country, provider and organisation. Frequently asked questions
Can two eSIM numbers remain reachable at the same time?
Usually yes on a compatible Dual SIM phone, but during one call the other line may be less reachable depending on device, provider and Wi-Fi calling. Test both directions. Also check whether your model supports two active eSIMs or requires one physical SIM.
Can my employer see my personal line?
Not merely because two SIMs are active. Management rights are more likely to come from a work profile, managed app or Mobile Device Management. Ask what the organisation can control or inspect. One phone remains a shared security domain even when its mobile numbers are separate.
Can I disable the business eSIM outside working hours?
Yes, you can generally turn off a line temporarily without deleting its profile. You will not receive ordinary calls or SMS on that line. Check voicemail, forwarding and authentication first, and agree what is expected during outages or on-call duties.
Which line does WhatsApp use with Dual SIM?
WhatsApp accesses the internet through the active data line, while the account remains linked to the number used at registration. A second SIM does not automatically create another account. Check current app options and use a managed business version when your organisation requires it.
What happens to the business eSIM when I leave my employer?
That depends on ownership and the provider process. The organisation may retain, transfer or block the number and profile. Do not delete the eSIM yourself until IT and the provider confirm the route. Store personal data separately if the phone can be remotely managed or erased.
