Using two eSIMs at the same time: what iPhone, Pixel, and Samsung allow

Two eSIMs can be active at the same time on supported devices, but mobile data normally runs through one selected line. iPhone 13 models and newer support two active eSIMs. Google lists Pixel 7 and newer, provided the carrier permits it. On Samsung devices, the available combination depends on the model and region.

HolySim advice: do not only check how many profiles the phone can store. Stored and active at the same time are two different limits.

What using two lines at once means

A phone can often store several eSIM profiles while only one or two lines may be active. With two active lines, you can keep your regular number reachable while using HolySim for mobile data, for example.

The phone uses one mobile data network as the default. Calls and SMS use the line you configure or select for each contact. With a data-only travel eSIM, your regular SIM remains the logical line for traditional calls and SMS.

Two active eSIMs on iPhone

Apple states that iPhone 13 models and newer support Dual SIM with two eSIMs. Older compatible iPhones usually use Dual SIM with one physical nano-SIM and one eSIM. Regional models may differ.

Set it up as follows:

1. Add both profiles through Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM.
2. Give each line a clear label.
3. Select the regular line as the default for calls and messages.
4. Select HolySim under Cellular Data.
5. Turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching to prevent fallback to the regular line.
6. Only enable data roaming on the travel eSIM.

Apple explains the combinations and usage under Using Dual SIM with an eSIM. To use two different carriers, the iPhone must be unlocked unless both lines are from the same carrier.

Two active eSIMs on Google Pixel

Google lists two active eSIM profiles from Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro onward, as long as the mobile carrier supports the feature. Depending on the model, older Pixel phones can use Dual SIM with one physical SIM and one eSIM.

Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs. Add the second profile and enable both lines. Then configure your preferences for calls, SMS, and mobile data. Google explains the requirements under Dual SIM on Pixel.

With some combinations, a second line may temporarily be less reachable during a call. The behavior depends on the Pixel model, Android version, Wi-Fi calling, and carrier support.

Samsung: check the exact model

Samsung Galaxy devices can permit different combinations: two physical SIMs, one physical SIM plus eSIM, or two eSIMs. Even within one series, the regional version can differ.

Open Settings > Connections > SIM manager. If two eSIM profiles can be enabled at the same time, the device shows that option there. If an existing line turns off as soon as you enable the second, that configuration does not support two simultaneous eSIMs.

Check the product specifications and manual for the exact model number. For some models, Samsung warns that no more than two SIM lines can be active at once, regardless of how many physical cards and eSIMs are inserted or stored.

Safe travel settings

For most travelers, use this setup:

• your regular line stays on for incoming calls, SMS, and verification codes;
• HolySim is the mobile-data line;
• data roaming is on for HolySim;
• data roaming is off for your regular line;
• automatic mobile data switching is off.

Incoming calls to your regular number can incur charges outside the EU even when mobile data runs through HolySim. Check your own carrier’s roaming rates and do not answer a call when you do not know the cost.

Battery and coverage

Both active lines search for a network. This can use more battery, especially in an area with weak coverage. Temporarily turn off a line if you will not need it for several hours, but do not delete the profile.

Seeing two signal bars or carrier names does not tell you which line provides data. Check the selected data line and turn off Wi-Fi for a test.
