Airplane mode with eSIM: does your profile still work?
Learn what airplane mode does to an eSIM, which connections turn off, and how to safely restore data, roaming, Wi-Fi, and service when traveling abroad.

Airplane mode does not remove or erase your eSIM. It turns off the cellular radio, so the eSIM temporarily cannot connect to a mobile network. The profile and its settings remain stored. After landing, turn off airplane mode, check that the travel eSIM is selected for data, and enable data roaming when the plan requires it.
Short answer: an installed eSIM stays on your phone during airplane mode, but it provides no cellular data while the mobile connection is off. You can often turn Wi-Fi and Bluetooth back on separately during a flight if the airline permits them.
What exactly does airplane mode do to an eSIM?
An eSIM is a digital SIM profile stored in your device's secure SIM hardware. Airplane mode does not alter that profile. It interrupts the wireless connections the device uses to communicate with cellular towers.
Apple says airplane mode on iPhone turns off cellular and Wi-Fi while Bluetooth can remain on. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth can then be used separately if the airline allows them. Does the eSIM remain installed during the flight?
Yes. Airplane mode is a temporary network state, not a delete function. Your eSIM remains visible under Cellular, SIMs, or SIM manager, including the label you assigned to the line.

Do not delete an eSIM to comply with in-flight rules. Airplane mode is the intended setting. A deleted travel profile may require a new activation code.
Can you use Wi-Fi with airplane mode on?
Often, yes. Turn on airplane mode first, then enable Wi-Fi manually. You can connect to the onboard network without using the cellular radio. Always follow the crew's and airline's instructions.
Do WhatsApp and internet calls work over in-flight Wi-Fi?
Messages and internet calls can technically work over Wi-Fi, but only if the onboard network permits those services and has enough capacity. The travel eSIM is not active for that traffic: the app uses Wi-Fi. Regular cellular calls and SMS through your SIM line are unavailable in airplane mode.
How to turn your eSIM back on correctly after landing
Run this check when electronic devices may be used again:
- Turn off airplane mode.
- Open Cellular, SIMs, or SIM manager.
- Confirm that the travel eSIM is enabled.
- Select the travel eSIM as the mobile data line.
- Enable data roaming on the travel eSIM if the provider instructs you to.
- Leave roaming off on your home SIM to reduce the risk of unexpected data charges.
- Temporarily turn off Wi-Fi and open a website to test cellular data.

Why is there still no service after landing?
Network registration can take a moment after the radio turns back on. First check the active line, coverage, and roaming. Then turn airplane mode on once for about 10 seconds and off again to start a fresh network search. If data stays offline, follow no internet after eSIM installation.
Does airplane mode start or pause plan validity?
Do not assume airplane mode pauses the validity period. When a data plan starts and continues counting down varies by provider: at installation, activation, first network connection, or a fixed date. Once validity has started, the clock generally does not stop just because you are temporarily offline.
Can you install an eSIM before departure?
Often, but check the activation rule for the exact plan. Install it over stable Wi-Fi and leave the line off until arrival if instructed. Do not use airplane mode as your only protection against early activation: some packages start at installation or on a predetermined date.
Airplane mode, emergency calls, and safety
The cellular radio is off in airplane mode. Turn the mode off if you need to place a cellular emergency call after landing. Emergency features also differ by device: Google states, for example, that Emergency SOS on Pixel does not work in airplane mode.
Onboard Wi-Fi is not a guaranteed emergency connection and does not replace the crew's procedures or communication equipment. During a flight, alert cabin crew instead of trying to call a mobile emergency number yourself.

Does airplane mode delete my eSIM?
No. Airplane mode temporarily disables wireless connections but leaves the digital eSIM profile stored. After landing, turn it off so the line can register again. The profile is removed only when you explicitly choose Delete eSIM in your phone's SIM or cellular settings.
Does my eSIM use data in airplane mode?
Not through the cellular network while the cellular radio is off. Apps can still access the internet after you manually enable Wi-Fi. That traffic then uses the Wi-Fi network, not your eSIM allowance. After landing, verify which line is selected for mobile data.
Do I need to reactivate my eSIM after every flight?
Normally not. An installed and activated profile remains stored. Turn off airplane mode, enable the eSIM line, and wait for network registration. Only a deleted profile or a plan that has not yet activated may require additional installation or activation steps.
Can I use Bluetooth while airplane mode is on?
On many modern phones, yes. Apple normally leaves Bluetooth on when airplane mode is enabled; on Android, you can often turn it back on manually. Exact behavior varies by device and software version. Always follow the airline's and crew's instructions onboard.
Why does my eSIM not work immediately after landing?
The phone must search for and register on an allowed network again. Check that airplane mode is off, the travel eSIM is enabled, that line supplies mobile data, and roaming is set correctly. If needed, trigger one new network search and then check coverage and APN settings.
