A travel eSIM does not guarantee an IP address from the country you are physically visiting. Mobile traffic may be routed through a network platform in another country, causing streaming services to estimate your location differently. Availability may also depend on account region, licensing rights, GPS, payment details and the streaming service's policy.
Do not expect geo-unblocking: an eSIM is designed for mobile connectivity, not to deliver a particular streaming catalogue. Check downloads and viewing rights before departure and account for high data use.
Do you get a local IP address with an eSIM?
Sometimes, but not always. A local partner provides radio coverage, while the provider may process data traffic centrally. The public IP address may therefore be associated with a different city or country from your actual location.

A local IP address therefore does not guarantee access to every local or home catalogue.
Why does the Netflix catalogue change while travelling?
Netflix states that its selection, audio, subtitles and even some downloads can differ by country. See using Netflix outside your household. These differences result from licences and classifications, not because an eSIM blocks a specific product.

Does a VPN provide your home catalogue?
It is not guaranteed. Streaming services may block VPN or proxy traffic, and their terms govern permitted use. A VPN can also reduce speed and add connection problems. Use one for privacy or workplace policy, not on the assumption that catalogue access is assured.
Live sports and local television
Sports rights are often more strictly regional than general video on demand. A service may combine IP address, device location and home region. Do not buy an eSIM solely because someone promises that one streaming service will work. Ask the streaming service itself about viewing rights and download options.
How much data does streaming over eSIM use?
Streaming can consume a data allowance quickly, but usage varies by service, resolution, codec and setting. Check the estimate in the app and set mobile video quality to Save data or a similar option.
Practical steps:
- Download films and episodes at home over Wi-Fi.
- Disable autoplay for previews.
- Limit video quality on mobile data.
- Pause cloud backups while watching.
- Check usage after the first 15 minutes.
- Do not use a hotspot for several simultaneous streams.

Is unlimited eSIM data ideal for streaming?
Not automatically. An unlimited plan may have fair-use throttling, a daily limit, video restrictions or a hotspot limit. Check the terms and read unlimited eSIM data and fair use before streaming for long periods.
Streaming does not work: diagnose without deleting the eSIM
Test an ordinary website first. If it works, the eSIM connection is active and the likely cause is the app, account, location check or service policy. Close the app, check for updates and temporarily disable the VPN.
If no mobile data works, check the active data line, roaming and allowance status. Do not delete the eSIM profile because of one streaming-service error code.
Why does my IP show the wrong country?
Mobile providers can route traffic through a central internet gateway. Report the mismatch to the eSIM provider with the time, country, network name and an IP check, but do not share the activation code. Only the provider can confirm whether another route or partner is available.
Hotel TV, casting and hotspot use
A hotel TV may apply home-location checks, device limits or its own network route. Sign out after your stay and remove the device from your streaming account. Casting works only if the phone and TV are allowed to discover each other; hotel Wi-Fi sometimes prevents that.
A personal hotspot may help, but it uses the same eSIM allowance and is not permitted by every plan. Check the hotspot terms and data usage per app.
