How to install an eSIM on Apple Watch: why a travel eSIM does not work directly

You cannot install a HolySim travel eSIM directly on an Apple Watch by scanning a QR code. An Apple Watch Cellular uses a special Watch plan from a supported mobile carrier, normally linked to the plan on your iPhone. You configure it through the Watch app, not through a separate eSIM menu on the watch.

HolySim advice: do not buy an additional travel eSIM with the intention of scanning its QR code on the Apple Watch. Use the eSIM on your iPhone and ask your own carrier whether international roaming is supported for the Watch.

What you need

For independent mobile internet on the watch, you need:

• an Apple Watch GPS + Cellular, not a GPS-only model;
• a compatible iPhone paired with the Watch;
• recent iOS and watchOS software;
• a supported cellular plan for Apple Watch;
• usually the same carrier on the iPhone and Watch.

Apple states that prepaid, business, or older plans may not always be eligible. The iPhone and Watch must be within the carrier’s range during setup. The exact requirements are listed under set up cellular on Apple Watch.

Set up cellular service

When first setting up a Cellular Watch, you are offered the option Set Up Cellular. If you skipped that step, you can do it later:

1. Open the Watch app on the paired iPhone.
2. Tap My Watch.
3. Open Cellular.
4. Tap Set Up Cellular.
5. Sign in to your mobile carrier if requested.
6. Select or activate the compatible Watch plan.
7. Wait for the plan to appear in the Watch app.

The carrier may display a separate number for administrative purposes. In daily use, the Watch normally shares the reachability features of the iPhone plan. Costs and supported features differ by carrier.

Why the HolySim QR code does not work on a Watch

A travel eSIM for a phone or tablet is a standalone data profile. The Apple Watch uses an extension of a phone plan supported by Apple and the mobile carrier. watchOS therefore has no general process for entering any SM-DP+ address or QR code.

The eSIM chip in the Watch does not mean that every eSIM product is compatible with it. A data-only travel plan that works perfectly on an iPhone still cannot be added as a separate Watch plan.

Check whether the Watch has a cellular connection

Temporarily turn off the iPhone or move it out of range, and disconnect known Wi-Fi networks if you want to test the independent connection. Open Control Center on the Watch. The cellular button turns green when the watch is using the mobile network. Green bars show the signal strength.

The Watch normally chooses the paired iPhone first, then known Wi-Fi, and only then cellular. A white cellular button can therefore mean that the iPhone connection is being used, not that setup has failed.

Traveling with Apple Watch Cellular

International roaming on Apple Watch only works with supported models, carriers, countries, and VoLTE agreements. Apple lists roaming from watchOS 9.1 for compatible Cellular models, but not every carrier offers it.

Ask your regular mobile carrier before departure whether Watch roaming is included in your plan. Data roaming on the HolySim line on your iPhone does not automatically make the Watch plan suitable for roaming. When the Watch remains close to the iPhone, it can use the paired iPhone for internet access and notifications.

If Set Up Cellular is missing

First check that you actually have a GPS + Cellular model. Update both devices, restart them, and confirm that the Watch is correctly paired with the iPhone. If the option is still missing, ask your carrier whether the country, plan, and device are supported.

HolySim can check a phone eSIM, but it cannot activate an unsupported Apple Watch plan. For that, you need the carrier that provides your iPhone plan.
