Data usage
How much data does TikTok use? Allow 0.5 to 1.5 GB per hour
TikTok uses an estimated 0.5 to 1.5 GB per hour. Calculate the cost of ten minutes of daily scrolling and limit video, uploads, and background data.
In this guide
Allow approximately 0.5 to 1.5 GB per hour for TikTok. Ten minutes of scrolling therefore uses roughly 80 to 250 MB. TikTok does not publish a fixed MB-per-hour table, so these figures are HolySim guidelines for planning a travel data plan.
HolySim advice: measure one normal fifteen-minute session before departure. TikTok usage varies so much that your own phone says more than one average.
Usage per ten, thirty, and sixty minutes
Based on 0.5 to 1.5 GB per hour, you can allow:
- ten minutes: approximately 80 to 250 MB;
- fifteen minutes: approximately 125 to 375 MB;
- thirty minutes: approximately 250 to 750 MB;
- one hour: approximately 0.5 to 1.5 GB;
- two hours: approximately 1 to 3 GB.
The high end fits high video quality, fast networks, frequent Live content, and longer preload buffers. Data-saving settings and more modest video quality bring you closer to the low end.
Why short videos still use a lot of data
A TikTok video is short, but the app plays continuously. While you watch, the following video may already be loading. Advertisements, comments, profile pictures, sounds, and previews also count.
Scrolling quickly does not automatically mean lower usage. Part of a video may already have downloaded before you skip it. A long session with short clips remains ordinary video streaming.
The app can adapt quality to the connection and device. A fast 5G connection gives TikTok room to deliver higher quality, which can consume your allowance faster.
What daily TikTok costs on holiday
Ten minutes a day seems small. Over two weeks, that is 140 minutes, or 2 hours and 20 minutes. With our range, this uses approximately 1.2 to 3.5 GB.
Thirty minutes a day for fourteen days is seven hours of TikTok. That comes to approximately 3.5 to 10.5 GB. Maps, messages, photos, and a reserve must still be added.
A 5 GB plan therefore only suits limited TikTok use. For half an hour every day, 10 to 20 GB is more realistic, depending on the actual app measurement.
Live and uploads
TikTok Live can use more data than ordinary clips because video arrives continuously and the stream adapts to your connection. For long Live sessions, calculate near the high end of the range.
Uploading video also counts. Its size depends on length, resolution, and compression. An upload may be attempted again if the connection drops. Wait to upload several holiday videos until reliable Wi-Fi is available.
Set automatic cloud backup of the original video to Wi-Fi only as well. Otherwise, the recording first goes to your photo service and then a version goes to TikTok. One video can then use mobile data twice.
Configure TikTok to use less data
Under Profile > Menu > Settings and privacy, check whether your app version offers a Data Saver or video quality option. Availability and names can vary by version, device, and region.
Also use your phone's setting. On iPhone, enable Low Data Mode for the eSIM. Apple states that this mode restricts background traffic and can lower streaming quality. On Android, enable Data Saver through Settings > Network & internet > Data Saver.
Block mobile data for TikTok completely if you only want to use the app over Wi-Fi. On iPhone, you can do this per app under Cellular. Android usually offers a per-app switch for background data and sometimes for all mobile data.
A time limit saves more than a hidden setting
The greatest saving often comes from watching for less time. Ten fewer minutes per day saves approximately 1.2 to 3.5 GB over two weeks.
Use your phone's screen-time or app timer. TikTok also has screen-time tools, but the exact options depend on age, region, and app version. A fifteen-minute timer stops a quick check from quietly becoming an hour.
That helps both your plan and your travel day. The cat in sunglasses will still be there tomorrow.
Preloading and background usage
TikTok can use network traffic while preparing content or updating notifications. Restrict background data on Android or disable Background App Refresh for TikTok on iPhone.
Do not force-close the app after every clip; reopening it may load new content. Focus on limiting background permissions and usage time.
Also watch for Wi-Fi Assist. A phone may switch to mobile data when hotel Wi-Fi is weak. During long feed sessions, check which network symbol is visible.
Measure TikTok on iPhone
Open Settings > Cellular, note the usage beside TikTok, and use the app for fifteen minutes without Wi-Fi. Check the difference afterward. Apple shows usage by app for the current measurement period.
Multiply the result by four for a rough hourly figure. Repeat the test on a second day. A session consisting mainly of Live content may differ from an ordinary For You feed.
Reset the statistics shortly before your trip if you want a clean counter during the holiday. Record your home measurement first.
Measure TikTok on Android
Open your device's data usage menu and select TikTok. On Pixel, the path is Settings > Network & internet > Internet > carrier settings > App data usage. Samsung usually uses Connections > Data usage > Mobile data usage.
Select a period matching your test and look at foreground and background data. Google states that the phone measurement may differ from the carrier's measurement. Use your HolySim balance to determine your remaining allowance.
TikTok in your plan calculation
Take the measured MB per fifteen minutes, multiply it by the expected number of sessions and then by the travel days. Add a 20% reserve.
Example: you measure 250 MB in fifteen minutes and expect one session a day for ten days. That is 2.5 GB. With the reserve, it becomes 3 GB. At least 5 GB probably suits the entire trip, provided your other usage remains limited.
Compare this result with usage guidelines for your other apps and your complete travel data calculation.

TikTok does not publish a fixed table of mobile data usage per hour. The ranges in this guide are therefore HolySim planning guidelines. The measurement paths and system data-saving features were checked with Apple and Google. App version, codec, video quality, Live, advertisements, preloading, and uploads determine the actual result. Frequently asked questions
How many MB does ten minutes of TikTok use?
Allow roughly 80 to 250 MB. Measure your own phone because quality and preloading make a significant difference.
Is 5 GB enough for TikTok on holiday?
Possibly, for brief daily use. Thirty minutes a day can already use approximately 3.5 to 10.5 GB over two weeks.
Does TikTok use data when the app is not open?
There may be background traffic for notifications and content. Restrict background data and enable your phone's data-saving mode.
Does uploading a video also use data?
Yes. Uploads and any repeated attempts use your allowance. Cloud backup of the original may add more.
How can I save the most TikTok data?
Limit viewing time, use Data Saver, disable background data, and upload over Wi-Fi only.
