When should you install your eSIM? Before or during your trip?

The difference between installing and activating, plus a clear timeline so your eSIM works at exactly the right moment and you never waste days of your plan.

The short answer: install your eSIM at home before you leave, but only start using it once you reach your destination. That way you handle the fiddly part calmly on wifi, while your plan only starts counting when you actually need it.

It sounds simple, but there is an important detail behind it. Installing and activating are two different things. Once you understand that difference, you avoid the two most common mistakes: getting stuck without internet at the airport, or burning days off your plan before your trip has even started.

Still deciding between an eSIM and a local SIM card in the first place? We compare both in eSIM or local SIM card: which is better?.

Installing is not the same as activating

This is the heart of the whole thing.

  • Installing means downloading the eSIM profile onto your phone. This needs internet, so do it on wifi. Your phone now knows the eSIM, but is not using it yet.
  • Activating means the eSIM actually connects to a network and your plan starts running. This usually only happens once you are at your destination and turn on mobile data.

For most travel eSIMs, validity starts the moment the eSIM first connects to a network in the right country. So installing days in advance is perfectly fine, as long as you are not actually using it yet.

One caveat: a small number of providers start the clock the instant you scan the QR code. Always check the terms of your specific plan. When in doubt, look at your confirmation email to see when validity begins.

Why installing at home is the smart move

Installing an eSIM takes a few minutes and needs a stable internet connection. You do not want to do that for the first time while you are rushing to the gate, or just after landing in a country where your home SIM no longer works.

At home on your own wifi you have calm, a reliable connection and time to check that everything is correct. If something goes wrong with the QR code, you can still reach out for help before you leave.

The ideal timeline

Stick to this rhythm and you will always be fine.

  • 3 to 7 days before departure: buy your eSIM and read which country it covers and when validity begins.
  • 1 to 2 days before departure: install the eSIM at home on wifi. Give the profile a clear name, like "Travel eSIM", so you recognise it quickly later.
  • On the day of departure: check your settings, but keep mobile data on your regular SIM. Do not turn on data roaming for the eSIM yet.
  • On arrival at your destination: set mobile data to your travel eSIM and switch on data roaming. From this point the eSIM connects and your plan starts running.

With this approach you do the technical work safely at home, while never wasting precious days of your plan.

Before or during your trip? How to choose

It depends on what your plan does.

  • Validity starts on network connection (most common): install well in advance, activate only at your destination. The relaxed scenario.
  • Validity starts on installation or on scanning the QR code: install just before or on arrival instead, so you lose no days. This is always stated in your terms.

Not sure? The safest rule of thumb is: download the profile at home, but only turn on mobile data and data roaming at your destination. That keeps you covered with almost any plan.

Frequently asked questions

Does my plan start running the moment I install the eSIM?

Usually not. For most travel eSIMs, validity only begins when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination. Some plans do start when you scan the QR code, so always check your terms.

Can I install my eSIM a week in advance?

Yes, installing days or even weeks ahead is fine. As long as you have not turned on mobile data and data roaming and are not at your destination, your phone is not using the eSIM yet.

What if I have no wifi at my destination?

That is exactly why you install the profile at home. The download happens on your own wifi, well before departure. On arrival you only need to switch on mobile data and data roaming, which needs no wifi.

Do I need to turn on data roaming?

Yes. A travel eSIM uses local networks abroad, and that requires data roaming. Turn it on for your travel eSIM only, not your regular SIM, to avoid unexpected charges.

Will the eSIM already work at home before I leave?

Usually not, and that is by design. The plan is valid for a specific country or region, so it only connects once you are there. Until then your regular SIM keeps providing your internet.

What is the safest choice if I am not certain?

Install at home on wifi, but leave mobile data on your regular SIM until you have arrived. Only switch to the travel eSIM and turn on data roaming at your destination. That way you save every day of your plan, no matter how its validity starts.
